I was doing an art show in Key West and tent-camped on an adjacent Island in a private campground. I'm not exaggerating when I say my site was postage stamp size. There was room for my truck, a picnic table, and a a little space for my tent. That was it. Bear in mind, this little campground was packed with RVs, so I was lucky to get anything. There was a full-sized bus RV that must have cost as much as you pay for a house. I only spent a few hours there every night to sleep, so it didn't matter to me. The rates were similar to what you'd pay for a modest motel. This was insular life, lilliputian in size and gargantuan in price.
.
Land and space is at a premium on Islands like Key West, and everything has to be shipped in because there is no space for farms or anything. You go to McDonald's and it's a tiny little building.
It also felt like time was at a premium. People were vacationing there and they had to take in everything in in a short time. Bars were blaring music all day long. The art show was not great either. The word was that a tourist ship neglected to stop there for some reason, so there were thousands of people who didn't show up.
There was one thing I noticed about Key West that I thought was cool, though. There were a lot of chickens running around. It almost seemed like they were native there, and just lived in the town free range. It added to the atmosphere.
Soon after I got back home in Dallas, I was listening to NPR and there was a story about Key West. it seems that's the city passed an ordinance against letting chickens run free. Dang! That was the only thing I liked about Key West.

Knights Inn
Add a K to Night? Is that as creative as you can get? I guess a bed is a bed. Or will we dream of King Arthur and Maid Marion?

USPS Post Office, Ochopee, Florida. Located on U.S. 41 in the 'glades.
I had just come out of the Fakahatchie Strand, and I wanted to mail a postcard. I sat in the truck addressing the card, and a tour bus pulled up with 30 people doing the same thing. They wanted the postmark from Ochopee to send home. It was the smallest Post Office in the country. That was the big draw. I waited in the truck for all the people to get their cards postmarked. As soon as they were finished the post mistress left the building, climbed into to her car, and drove off. She came back 10 minutes later and apologized. (There's no room for a bathroom.) It didn't bother me. While I was waiting, a bald eagle flew over. That area is rich with wildlife.

Hotel Earle
There is a real hotel in New York City by that name, and it is a haven for writers, who needs seclusion and privacy to work.
In the Coen brothers movie, Barton Fink, the title character is a first-time successful playwright who goes to Los Angeles to write screenplays. He lives in a hotel with the same name, Hotel Earle, but he struggles with writer's block. And things get worse from there. Much, much worse!
