@kjw47,
Quote:
Rev 12 is clear...

The Book of Revelation is decidedly not clear about anything, other than its febrile author having a very rich imagination.

Many of Russell's predictions either never came to pass or were post-dated to make them seem accurate.

Unfulfilled Watch Tower Society predictions

@kjw47,
South Park did an episode where all the worlds fictional characters staged a war in imagination land; all the important characters including Jesus were there. I forgot who won that war, but it does not matter. Six million also died when the Christians burnt them at the stake. This happens when the imaginary world transgresses on the real world. Cult based thinking defies logic and rationality.

@hightor,
The funny thing about those who make predictions. If they make a prediction that comes true it is remembered but if their predictions are wrong, they are quickly forgotten. The game is always stacked toward the positive predictions.

The bible is so totally confusing because it has many different authors with many different agendas. There is a section in the bible where it is made clear that Jesus was gay. The story about Jesus and the young boy reads like gay porn. Somehow the anti-gay preachers never base their sermon on this section of the bible. Jesus was a 30 something unmarried man, makes one wonder.

In the Middle East many countries still have a tribal make up. In America religious cults are the warring tribes each tribe undercuts the others claiming the others are imposters. This fractures any chance of national unity. It is absurd for one religious cult to claim the other religious cult is illegitimate when they both are.

The primary purpose of a cult is to control the way you think. If they can control the way you think, they can control you. If the church down the street tells you that a flying grandpa created the world you will look around, you for confirmation. Sure, enough the others in the cult (church) believe in their story of creation. In any cult independent thought is not only discouraged it is not tolerated. Cults were designed to push certain ideas and to ensnare others.

God has 1 truth. You missed it, Eternal life is on the line for you. Eternal life in perfection, not aging like now, never sick or diseased. Its worth the effort to gain it. One must live now to do Jesus' Fathers will over self.( Matt 7:21)

@kjw47,
Look around you there is no such thing as eternal life. Death is an integral and necessary part of life. Life renews itself. Life is a cycle birth and death are interlocking parts. You have been taken in by an army of conmen. You have to leave the orbit of logical thought to believe that 2,000-year ignorance. It is just wishful thinking; it is what you wish were true instead of what is true.

Life is a huge marketplace of ideas, but most people are basically lazy and would prefer other people doing their thinking. Think of a mother bird regurgitating down her young's throat. This is the way most people acquire knowledge. This avoids necessary checks and balances. Thus comes the supernatural, beyond nature, beyond logic and beyond the laws of the universe.

Did you ever ask yourself if God were real why would he remain invisible? If God's intention was to recruit followers why not make an appearance and demonstrate his powers? This is surely a way to increase the number of his followers which is the primary purpose of every cult. What is the primary advantage of remaining invisible? The obvious one is that he does not exist and this allows any number of conmen to tell you what God's will is. If God existed, he could dictate his will to one and all and you would not see the differences between competing churches. For the religious cults to exist it is absolutely necessary that God remain invisible or never existed.

@Zardoz,
God showed the Israelites he existed, he caused 10 plagues and parted the red sea to save them. 1 week later they made a statue of a calf to worship. Over and over the Israelites fell away in OT, and NT permanently. He showed them over and over.

@kjw47,
What you have is a story that was made up by ignorant people and then passed down through generations by word of mouth. The chances that any of it is true is slight. What was said to have happened a couple of thousands of generations ago is little more than a myth. All cultures have creation myths and stories of their God's mythic accomplishments. Joseph Campbell called them the hero journey. He had studied cultures across the world. His book is called "The Power of Myth." While all the myths are different, they have a common thread, the "hero's journey." The hero of the myth has to overcome many obstacles and hardships. Sound familiar? It is the plot for many popular movies.

It looks like God would have appeared to all cultures across the world and the myths would be the same or was God just lazy and only appeared to a few select people in huge world. People can never get enough of the hero's journey it is a myth that will be retold to the end of time. In effect that is what religion is, the retelling of the hero's journey.

The majority often prevails by sheer numbers; people often look around to see how many people hold a certain belief and make their belief system conform to majority. The fact that a majority holds a belief does not make it correct. History has shown us that the majority is not always right and that belief systems can be wrong. George Carlin reminds that there are others who have seen through the obvious inconsistences.

@hightor,
That is a good line. Carlin had a way of going directly to the core of the problem and make light of it. It is indeed frightening when you think how stupid the average person is and that half of them are stupider than that. It makes you wonder why we haven't joined the dinosaurs. Garbage in results in garbage out and ends badly for everybody.

So many of our beliefs are governed not by whether they are right or wrong but by the number of people who believe in them

@kjw47,
God has no proof and he is not going to give any proof in the future. All he has to do is show himself in fact we have many who claim to be Jesus but most of them are locked safely away. Eternal life violates the laws of the universe. We can look all around us and see death is a reality. Here we go again eternal life is invisible, but death is real. Our bodies deteriorate quickly just as bodies of animals do. As always, you have to enter into the realm of the invisible to create eternal life. I have an invisible bridge for sale, interested? It is one thing to deny reality but quite another to create an invisible world to justify your thinking.

There is a good reason there is not a big market for invisible bridges or invisible anything else for that matter. The watchwords are, "don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see." Unfortunately, there is a big market for invisible philosophy, especially religious philosophy. Real world rules simply don't apply to religious philosophy. How can one be rational on one hand and irrational in the next? It is like the religious cult members go in and out of an alternative universe.

Religion has provided us with some of the biggest tragedies in history. Think Jim Jones, David Koresh and the witch burnings. The old saying is send your money to God but they give you their address.

One of the big problems with religion is that you need an interpreter to tell you what the bible actually means. The preacher is the interpreter, and the congregation is furnished with all his prejudices and his interpretations. The problem is that different preachers have both different prejudices and interpretations. Often churches split up because they cannot agree on an interpretation of a single passage of the bible. Thus, a new church is born.

It not so much what preachers pick out of the bible to teach as to what they leave out. The Christian rights prejudices against gays are well known but the bible has a passage that indicates Jesus was gay. How many preachers base their sermon on this passage? The current prejudices trump the bible. The bible can be used to prove anything because it was written by different authors. What you get when you go to church is the personal prejudices and interpretations of that preacher of course, you are free to shop around and find a preacher whose personal prejudices and interpretations are closer to yours.

Ask yourself if you were not in a religious cult what would you do with your time and money. Sunday morning could be used for recreation and relaxation. Most families can use more money. That 10% of your income used to brainwasher others is a waste. I used my Sunday mornings to train for triathlons. Time is precious it is foolish to waste it worshiping an invisible "God."
