Book altering

Is anyone else a fan of this beautiful art movement?

I am altering a book as a present for someone, but I've altered one before for my own personal use. I think it's wonderful..

I'll be honest, I just don't get it -- but I'm sure some other people here do.

This is the first time I hear about this movement. I can't get into the link, when I try I get booted right out. I would like to know more about this. Don't you get in trouble with the author who owns the rights to the book?

Altered Books

Is this the one you created already or the one your making for a friend? This is so super kewl. It reminds me of Frida Kahlo's diary pages, and some other books created by some of the surrealist artist.

AE,

No - once you purchase the book, it's yours. I don't get sued for spilling coffee on the pages, I can't get sued for making them beautiful.

And no - those are not photos of my work. The pictures I posted before belong to the link that unfortunately doesn't work for you. Here, try this:

http://www.alteredbookartists.com/ - give it time to load.

That's because nobody tries to make money off of spilling coffee on a book. If someone wrote a book and people started doodling in it and showing it in galleries and possibly trying to sell it, I think the author would have a good case to sue.

I would not like it. Come to think of it, it's like a form of book graffiti.

And, if your going to exhibit the book, the author should be notified, and maybe paid some royalties if you sell the book. Rolling Eyes

Well, dear, that's why do not show it off in galleries. It's merely personal expression. If the authors are so uptight as to get upset over this, then that is something I'll leave them to deal with. They've still got their earnings, after all the books were purchased somehow, and the majority of books used for this purpose are old, worn-down copies found at thrift stores and garage sales.

Now, does anyone actually want to discuss the artwork?

No, you're fussing about the legalities of whether or not we're alowed to alter books. Obviously, if it were a crime, someone would have stopped it years ago. It's a movement, it's been big since the late 90's, I'd say. There are no legal woes, and if there are then it's very minute things that obviously haven't haulted the thousands of people who alter books.

If you wish to continue discussing that, then please do. I will return to the thread when someone has interest in sharing their own art, or discussing techniques.

When did this movement start? The books the surrealist created were more original, and honest I think because it was all their own creations. Or is it that these artist can't afford their own art supplies?

*sigh*

The point is to use the book...it is a canvas. You have an entire portfolio of artwork right at your hands. Do you recall Forest Gump, always inserting souveniers, that feather especially, into his Curious George book? That was book altering. It's not a matter of lacking art supplies, it's instead using something someone has already created and altering it.

It seems you are the only one in the forum so far that alters books. I would not do it out of respect for the hard work of the author.
But, I'm sure others will follow your example.

Please don't consider it as disrespectful... it's not. We usually chose books that mean something to us or have affected us. It's worth more to have a good book underneath the coats of paint than just "some ol' thing."

To me art is to share with others, and if you cannot exhibit your books then what do you do with them, show them at house parties? Oh, yes give them as gifts, thats good too.
