Please do post the pixel art. It would be interesting to compare it to Pointillism art.

Oh but there is. Speed in the creation compared to skill for one. But, it does not have to become a debate.

heh, pretty sure graphic art doesn't mean anything beyond organizing images and words to make good compositions for advertisement

I've tried to begin doing pixel art, though I'm sure I'm not doing it right, it's still pretty fun.

Ahh yes, I forgot to mention...no filters. Just the pencil tool and the eyedrop tool, and paint bucket as well.

That's interesting, but it's not pixel art.

Pixel art has it's name because you work at the pixel level. You place individual pixels.

It's not an art movement, it simple exists because computer games used to have very low resolution, and small color palettes. You can't rely on scanning things in because you need to draw things so small and with such limited colors that a scanned picture would look very bad, and only a human could figure out clever ways to use the pixels to make recognizeable things. So people had to do it by hand...and that's where pixel art comes from.

You can still find people doing pixel art who work on games that have low res graphics, using limited color palettes.

Techniques like dithering must be used to give the appearance of more colors.

No, it's not all done 1 pixel at a time, but a lot of it is. The difference between pixel art and regular CG art is that normally you're not concerned with what individual pixels are doing because your resolution is so large. Here, you frequently work zoomed in...dealing with individual pixels. For instance, if you were to draw a character, that would definitely be 1 pixel at a time. You can speed up things by using a line tool where you only have to specify the start and end coordinates, so technically this could put down several pixels at a time..typical dimensions are only 320x240.

edit: already posted a link showing how it is often done, but heres a specific tutorial that should give you a good idea.

Are you drawing over photographs, or just looking carefully at photographs?

If it's done with photoshop, it sure looks great, and different.
