Anyone have a suggestion as to how to get an image ... JPG, GIF etc ... down to less than what? 8 k?

AlexH, if you click on any avatar on the site, you will open another window with the Avatar Tutorial on it. It includes instructions about how to use Paint to change the size of an image.
