Going to see my first Shakespeare play at Stratford...

...will my brow be knotted and my comely buttocks be numb?

but seriously, I have about as much knowledge of Shakespeare as Britney! I can't really call myself British with such a lack of knowledge of the Bard...in an effort to rectify, we have booked tickets for Twelth Night at Stratford for next Saturday night. Mr S's dissertation was on 'Twins in Shakespeare' so he's a right know it all.

Will I be bored?
Should I read the plot first?
Will I understand it?
Does anyone get nekked?

Only perk is we have booked into the 4* Thistle Inn, right opposite the theatre (I feel so cultured even typing 'the theatre) for a night of Shakesperean bawdiness!

Shakespeares English is from a completely different time smorgs, you need to read it a couple of times to be in with a chance, I could never make head nor tail of it. Best of luck Very Happy

I envy you, Sara. Twelvth Night is a good start to seeing Shakespeare performed. It's a rollicking romp of a comedy, bawdy and hilarious. I wouldn't worry about the language problem too muc. The language may be "from a completely different time", as Don 1 says, but, after all, it is being mouthed by contemporary actors who speak the same language as you and are endeavoring to entertain you. It's a lot harder reading Shakespeare than it is to understand it when it's performed. I remember having to read "Hamlet" in school. I was having real difficulty making heads or tails out of those stilted speeches. But then I saw the Lawrence Olivier movie version and suddenly -- voila! -- totally obscure ramblings made sense.

Enjoy, enjoy!

Have a blast, Smorgie

All the world's a stage, you know, as Elvis Presley said.

From what I remember of Stratford, it's a canny wee toon.

Francis, I believe Bottom is a character in A Midsummer Night's Dream, not Twelvth Night.

Touché, Andy!

But can I remark that "Bottom's dream" is also called "remembrance of things to come"?

I've been to The Globe on the South Bank, it's great.

We saw a performance of "Macbeth" in Xhosa language by a Zulu troupe, and some of them were nearly nekkid. Very lively. It had surtitles for those keeping up.

Marvellous.

Re: Going to see my first Shakespeare play at Stratford...
Absolutely read a summary of the plot, if not the play itself, ahead of time.

I saw "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Royal Shakepeare in Stratford
some years ago and loved it. I hope you have the same experience.
Please revisit the thread afterwards and tell us all about it.

Hi Smorgs! Long time no see.

I'm excited for you to get to go and see a play in Stratford. I've seen a lot of Shakespeare done, but never there where it all began.

By all means, rent the movie and watch it. Or read a summary of the plot, as suggested. Or at least have Mr. Smorgs give you a rundown of the plot. I think it will be more fun for you if you're not trying to sort out the characters for the first time while you're seeing it.

I remember Anne Hathaway's cottage, and I believe there was a bed there. Whether or not it was actually her bed is another question. I'm guessing the bed at the 4 Thistle Inn will be lots more comfy for your post-theatre activities. Very Happy

Please come back and tell us how it goes.

Old Will didn't write a lot of nude scenes.

Back in the day, it was considered improper for women to appear on
stage, so women's parts were generally played by boys. Boys, of course
would be less convincing in a nude scene. There's only so much you can
do with makeup.
