How do I remove mastic from hardwood floor?

We have been pulling up a tile entry floor which was put down
directly on a hardwood floor using mastic. Is there anything that
will soften or disolve old mastic so it can be removed? We have
been scraping it off the floor with great difficulty.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any thick bodied adhesive remover will do the job. Daub some on the lumpy parts and wait about fifteen minutes. It will scrape off easily.

If you are in the USA, look for Jasco Adhesive Remover.

The floor is going to have to be sanded and refinished in any case.
