!995 ford ranger fuel problem

I'd like to know what to look for when my truck stops periodically, it seems as though it's the fuel pump but I've replaced it. I've had it in a shop to see if it could be found and they could not find it. I had it towed twice, only to get it to the destination and find it startedright up. There is no rhyme or reason to this madness. Could some one pleaes help me with this? Also, where is the sending unit for the fuel pump?
