Protesters disrupted a ceremony commemorating Russia's dead during WW2 in Poland by throwing red liquid at the Russian ambassador and waving Ukrainian flags.

Ukraine is pushing to join the EU in the face of Russia's war of aggression. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, seems to be moving quickly to make a decision: the EU Commission wants to assess as early as June whether Ukraine can become an official EU accession candidate. This was announced by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Twitter on Monday after a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj.

And Macron, as EU president, said there would be no decision on to accept them until the war is over at least.

@engineer,
Funny. Putin has lost the sea war in a land battle with a country that has no Navy.

Ukraine pushes back Russian troops in counter-offensive near Kharkiv

KHARKIV, Ukraine, May 10 (Reuters) - Ukraine said on Tuesday its forces had recaptured villages from Russian troops north and northeast of the city of Kharkiv, pressing a counter-offensive that could signal a shift in the war's momentum and jeopardise Russia's main advance.

Ukrainian troops in recent days recaptured four settlements north of Ukraine's second-largest city, said Tetiana Apatchenko, a press officer with the main Ukrainian force in the area.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the Ukrainian successes were gradually pushing Russian forces out of Kharkiv in the country's northeast, which has been under perpetual bombardment since the war began.

"But I also want to urge all our people... not to spread excessive emotions. We should not create an atmosphere of excessive moral pressure, where victories are expected weekly and even daily," Zelenskiy said in a video address.

Russian prisoner to be tried in first war crimes case in Ukraine
Source: The Hill

Ukraine’s Office of the Prosecutor General on Wednesday said that a Russian soldier was indicted and would face a trial for an alleged war crime.

The accused soldier, who is already in custody, shot and killed a 62-year-old civilian who was unarmed and riding a bicycle through the village of Chupakhivka in February, the prosecutor general’s office said.

Vadim Shishimarin, the 21-year-old soldier, will be the first Russian soldier to be put on trial for a war crime amid Moscow’s ongoing unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, according to The Washington Post.

Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova told the U.S. Helsinki Commission that Russia has committed almost 10,000 war crimes throughout the invasion, according to Axios.

@bobsal u1553115,
Dozens of destroyed vehicles, an unknown number of dead: While trying to cross a river in eastern Ukraine, a Russian battalion suffered heavy casualties, according to consistent reports.

This happened on the river Siversky Donets, a tributary of the Don in eastern Ukraine. There, a Russian combat unit tried to cross the river via pontoon bridges. But the artillery battalion of the 17th Ukrainian armoured brigade took the makeshift bridges under fire with its 122-millimetre howitzers - with devastating consequences for the Russian units, which consisted of about a thousand men and about 50 vehicles.

@Walter Hinteler,
It's an amazing what a people with their backs against the wall can do with modern weapons.

@izzythepush,
I’ve seen the footage, and it’s bad.
I just don’t get what kind of reaction the 10th or 12th clear case of Russian war crimes is supposed to elicit.

It’s been established that Putin’s a war criminal. Is continually and repeatedly showing the atrocities on newscasts supposed to outrage and move The Hague, or is it just disaster porn?

It really should be noted again that the International Criminal Court should not be confused with the UN’s International Court of Justice, which also sits in The Hague.

One hundred twenty-three states parties to the ICC have ratified the Rome Statute. Neither Ukraine nor Russia is a party to the Rome Statute of the ICC.
Nor is the USA. And the United States has long objected to any exercise of jurisdiction by the court over citizens of countries that are not part of the treaty that created it - like the United States, but also Russia.

@snood,
Should we not see proof of war crimes then, if it's just disaster porn and Putin won't be prosecuted?

Maybe we could do away with reporting altogether.

Jesus, Walter. I was just wondering if the graphic media coverage of war crimes made Putin any more likely to face accountability. I should have just said ‘the proper authorities’ like I was going to, to avoid your tireless pedantry.

No, that would be stupid and counterproductive.

I would think that there’s some sane middle ground between “doing away with reporting altogether” and playing the same footage of a person getting their guts splattered over and over several times a day over a “breaking news” banner.

But that’s just me.

You easily can put me on ignore.

But I still think it isn't "pedantry" to explain when courts and jurisdiction is confused.

@snood,
I've not seen the same graphic footage being shown over and over again on our news channels.

Graphic stuff isn't allowed to be shown anyway.

When I wrote about it, I didn't include footage of anything.

Well, maybe not, but in the limited context of my comments about media coverage, it’s like someone explaining watchmaking when all they were asked was the time of day.

@snood,
Doesn't it also become invisible and forgotten? It's current events.
