"Literally similar!" That has to be the most ridiculous phrase I've ever come across, and I've just spent the Summer marking 16 year olds' essays.

It means nothing, nothing at all, either something is similar or it's not, it can't be figuratively similar.

You're trying to use rhetoric when you've yet to master basic English.

You just end up looking ridiculous, all explosions are (literally) similar, but there's a huge difference between a cap pistol and a nuclear blast, no matter how literal their similarity happens to be.

I didn't bother reading the rest of your nonsense, but I'm sure it's just another lot of deranged, antisemitic, semi literate rantings cobbled together from conspiracy websites.

It's a shame your enforced absence did nothing to soothe your distempered brain.

Absolutely true, Walter; it trivializes Hitler's evil. Putin even isn't in Hitler's league, which only emphasizes how singularly evil Hitler was. Not that Putin is any sort of statesman himself.

@engineer,
In the logic of nuclear deterrence, the use of a nuclear bomb is actually pointless because a guaranteed nuclear counter-attack would only result in mutual annihilation. So whoever detonates dies himself. But because (fortunately) no one has yet tested the viability of this theory, there remains room for risk-taking.

Blind obedience in the military is something that happens in the spur of the moment. I'm sure that right now, throughout the Russian military, people are asking themselves what they will do when told to pull the trigger and that forethought could change what happens.
Indeed. Every person in the military has family, and not everyone has the security of a nuclear bunker. Apart from that, there will also be major moral concerns for (at least) some people.-

Thus, a change of power may be necessary to avert a final catastrophe. Putin, who has ignored all arguments and brushed aside all talks, is calling for a ceasefire and negotiations, but at the same time escalating with the nuclear threat. That he himself may disarm his weapon is increasingly unlikely.

Russia hit the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia with seven rockets, flattening an apartment building early on Thursday morning. The city’s authorities told Ukraine’s public broadcaster, Suspilne, that at least two had died and at least another five were trapped under the rubble, although later reports revised the death toll down to one. Rescue workers at the scene said they saved a three-year-old girl. Zaporizhzhia’s branch of Suspilne reported more explosions in the city at mid-morning Kyiv time.

I can't help wondering if the reason Russia is having trouble stopping the Ukrainian offensive is because they are spending all their ordinance attacking civilians behind the front lines. It's clearly a Russian strategy to make life terrible for the population of Ukraine in order to get them to capitulate, but seven rockets hitting an apartment building, not battle-hardened troops that are pushing your troops back doesn't make any sense, nor is there any indication that the strategy is working.

@engineer,
It's what they've been doing all along, punishing the civilian population for failure on the battlefield.

It worked in Chechnya and Syria.

The only reason it's not working here is because of Western support.

Russia has never been quick to adapt to changing circumstances.

@engineer,
As was pointed out on another thread, Putin now considers these civilians his forces are killing to be "Russians". Seems to be some sort of disconnect.

@hightor,
The latest the attacks were apartment blocks in the city of Zaporizhzhiaare, which is now a Russian territory and the inhabitants of those blocks are Russian citizens.

@Walter Hinteler,
This morning, the Russian organisation Memorial was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and now the judiciary is taking action against the human rights activists. A Russian court has ordered that the organisation be deprived of its Moscow offices, report the Russian agency Interfax and the newspaper Kommersant. These are the headquarters of Memorial.

The offices have been converted into "public property", Interfax quotes the court decision, meaning they have been assigned to the Russian state. The offices form the headquarters of the human rights organisation, where it had regularly held exhibitions.

On the organisation's Telegram channel it says: "Fortunately, the Nobel Medal is not sent by post."

Explosions occurred in the morning on the strategically important Kerch Bridge, which connects the Crimean peninsula with the Russian mainland.
Fires are visible in photos - this bridge was previously considered unreachable for Ukrainian attacks.

Images show burning train carriages and collapsed road sections on the Kerch bridge, a key supply route for Russian troops opened by Vladimir Putin in 2018

@Walter Hinteler,
The images have not yet been verified, but since there are videos and photos from different perspectives, a fake is as good as impossible.

The cause is still unclear. According to a report by the Russian state news agency RIA, a fuel tank on the bridge caught fire. In view of the pictures of the explosion, however, this can be ruled out as the cause. The burning tanks are probably a result of the explosion.

Both Russian and Ukrainian sources say that the explosion was not an accident. Recently, there have been repeated incidents of drones exploding in the Kerch region, which directly borders the bridge in Crimea.

There is a lot of speculation at the moment. It is possible that a truck exploded just as it was crossing the bridge. That's what the Russian National Anti-Terror Committee claims. However, getting a truck with an explosive device onto the bridge is not easy. Trucks are closely inspected and screened before passing the bridge.

There are also pictures showing a floating craft appearing under the bridge at the moment of the explosion, perhaps a small boat, perhaps a submarine. These images have not yet been verified, but the nature of the explosion could support this theory.

An attack from the air, for example with a missile, cannot be ruled out at present. However, such an attack seems unlikely. The type of explosion also points to this. Moreover, the bridge is strongly secured against missile attacks, among other things with stationary air defence systems. However, such systems have already failed in other Ukrainian attacks on Crimea, as well as in the destruction of the Russian missile cruiser Moskva in the Black Sea in April.

I was just reading an article from a reporter in Kharkiv. The city is Russian speaking and before the war, there was a lot of pro-Russian sentiment. Not anymore. They are 100% Ukrainian, all in. I guess when the country you support bombs your apartment complexes, it clarifies your mind on things.

Everyone in Russia knows her hits, and her criticism of the invasion of Ukraine is correspondingly severe. Now Alla Pugacheva has spoken out again. From Israel.

Interesting (and sad) reading about all the missile strikes over the last couple of days. Russia started out bombing everything in sight, stopped for a long time, then started again just recently. Did they stop because they had moral concerns? Obviously not. It's likely they were low on missiles. It's also interesting to see what their targets are. The strikes over the last two days have been against power generation facilities and civilian structures. I haven't seen one article saying a military target was hit. I think Russia has completely forgotten how to fight a real war. All their recent experience involves hammering civilians until the population concedes. This model might work in Syria or Chechnya where the population has no way to fight back, but it takes years to do that in active war.

@engineer,
It's to appease the rw critics.

They're happy with the slaughter and believe the civilian population can be intimidated into surrendering.

It's political and has no military purpose.

I'm sure everyone will not be in agreement here, but I think Biden has been masterful throughout all of this. Putin was really counting on getting a certain response from the West and at pretty much every turn, Biden has surprised him.

- Putin starts to move troops to Belarus for "military exercises". Expectation: West will be a bit nervous. Actual: Biden puts Russia on blast internationally and starts updating allies and formulating a plan.

- Putin moves lots of troops into position, claims it's completely defensive. Expectation: The West will be nervous just like in 2014. Actual: Biden announces the Russians are going to invade Ukraine and puts together concrete day one actions.

- Putin says WTF, never saw that coming. Some generals say maybe we should hold up, but Putin says we're going anyway and prepares financial reserves to withstand some sanctions. Expectation: West would wring their hands, call for sanctions but still keep buying Russian energy and Russia would hold Ukraine as a fait accompli. Actual: Sanctions slam down like a sledgehammer, Russian reserves in overseas banks are frozen, some Russian banks are locked out of the world financial system.

- Putin says WTF! but figures if he holds Ukraine, he can dictate terms. He threatens NATO about getting involved. Expected: Western counties would dither about while Ukraine runs out of firepower. Actual: Western military aid flows in almost like it was already set up to go and Biden walks an almost perfect line of providing really serious aid to Ukraine while not providing any provocation for NATO to get sucked in. The Ukrainians seem to magically know where all the Russian troops are, how to take out their flagship in the middle of the Black Sea, where to strike down their air defenses, where to strike Russian generals in the field. (This is not to take away from the will and sacrifice of the Ukrainians on the ground who are doing all the work here.)

- Putin says WTF!!! Pulls back to the Dunbas area to try and completely take over, threatens to use tactical nucs and plans a referendum on annex areas they control. Expected: At the mention of nucs, Western nations will cower and insist Ukraine enter into negotiations to "prevent nuclear war". Russia will have time to consolidate gains and hold a sham referendum. Actual: Armed with US artillery and intelligence, the Ukrainians sweep through formally occupied territory. Rather than hand wringing, Biden announces that we take the nuclear threat seriously, it would be a very bad call on the part of the Russians which could lead to Armageddon and the US is prepared to do what it must if it comes to that. The world is SHOCKED. The West is "dude, you shouldn't be using the A word". The East is like "tell Putin not to use nucs!" Biden refuses to back down. Putin does not use nucs.

Putin says WTF!!!!! Stages a ridiculous "referendum" at gunpoint, annexes territory he doesn't even control and calls for negotiations for peace now that this is Russian territory while also cutting off energy from Europe and showing it can attack key European infrastructure. He also mentions nucs again. Expectation: Europe will pressure Ukraine to come to the table, concede some land and provide Russia an offramp before winter sets in. Actual: The Ukrainians continue the fight, capturing more and more land as Western weapons pour in. The Russian army continues to look weak and ineffective; Russians flee a forced mobilization.

While you have to give tons of credit to the Ukrainians and their willingness to stand up to the brutality of the Russian army, politically, Biden (and team) has confounded Putin at every turn. Now Putin says he wants to talk to Biden at the G20. Not sure what he is expecting there, but Biden has trumped all his aces so far. Putin was expecting a weak-kneed comedian in Kiev and someone like Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump in the White House. What he got was the Ukranian version of George Washington and a President that feels a lot more like Kennedy or Reagan.

@engineer,
Pretty good and accurate summation. I think Biden has shown more strength, resolve, and CIC decisiveness than anyone ever predicted. Collaring and uniting the EU was the first brilliant thing he did.

A Ukraine human rights activist has asked the premier league to decide whether the owner of Manchester City, Sheikh Mansoor, deputy prime minister of the UAE, is a vit and proper person to own a premiership football club.

He has been helping oligarchs evade sanctions by allowing them to park their luxury yachts in his country.

Russian troops kill Ukrainian musician for refusing role in Kherson concert

Russian soldiers have shot dead a Ukrainian musician in his home after he refused to take part in a concert in occupied Kherson, according to the culture ministry in Kyiv.

Conductor Yuriy Kerpatenko declined to take part in a concert “intended by the occupiers to demonstrate the so-called ‘improvement of peaceful life’ in Kherson”, the ministry said in a statement on its Facebook page.

The concert on 1 October was intended to feature the Gileya chamber orchestra, of which Kerpatenko was the principal conductor, but he “categorically refused to cooperate with the occupants”, the statement said.

Kerpatenko, who was also the principal conductor of Kherson’s Mykola Kulish Music and Drama Theatre, had been posting defiant messages on his Facebook page until May.

The Kherson regional prosecutor’s office in Ukraine has launched a formal investigation “on the basis of violations of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional murder”. Family members outside Kherson lost contact with the conductor in September, it said.

Condemnation by Ukrainian and international artists was swift. “The history of Russia imposing a ‘comply or die’ policy against artists is nothing new. It has a history which spans for hundred of years,” said the Finnish-Ukrainian conductor Dalia Stasevska, who was scheduled to conduct the Last Night of the Proms at London’s Albert Hall last month before it was cancelled because of the Queen’s death.

“I have seen too much silence from Russian colleagues,” she said. “Would this be the time for Russian musicians, especially those living and working abroad, to finally step up and take a stand against the Russian regime’s actions in Ukraine?”

A fortnight ago Stasevska drove a truck of humanitarian supplies into Lviv from her home in Finland, before conducting the INSO-Lviv orchestra in a concert of Ukrainian contemporary music.

“We know the Russian regime is hunting activists, journalists, artists, community leaders, and anyone ready to resist the occupation,” said the prizewinning Ukrainian novelist turned war crimes investigator Victoria Amelina.

“Yet, even knowing the current pattern and history, we cannot and, more importantly, shouldn’t get used to hearing about more brutal murders of a bright, talented, brave people whose only fault was being Ukrainian.”

She drew a parallel between Kerpatenko and Mykola Kulish, the Ukrainian playwright after whom the theatre where the conductor worked is named.

“Kulish was shot on 3 November 1937, near Sandarmokh, with 289 other Ukrainian writers, artists and intellectuals. Yuriy Kerpatenko was shot in his home in Kherson in October 2022,” she said.

The Russians’ actions were “pure genocide”, said the conductor Semyon Bychkov from Paris, where he was performing as music director of the Czech Philharmonic. The St Petersburg-born conductor left Russia as a young man in the 1970s.

“The tragic irony of this is that talk about the superiority of Russian culture, its humanism,” he said. “And here they murdered someone who is actually bringing beauty to people’s lives. It is sickening.

“The bullets don’t distinguish between people. It didn’t make me feel worse that this man was a conductor, it just confirmed the pure evil that’s been going on even before the first bombs fell on Ukraine.”

The novelist Andrey Kurkov, author of Death and the Penguin, said: ““Now the name of Yuriy Kerpatenko will be added to the list of murdered artists of Ukraine. I increasingly think that Russia is not only seeking to occupy Ukrainian territories, but also diligently destroying Ukrainian identity, an important part of which is Ukrainian culture.”
