This is my favorite sign for tattoos (turns out I don't have a sign, but I wish I had invested in skin repair clinics because at some time in the future, removing tattoos will be a big money maker)

I suppose it varies from person to person. It might be to conform, to rebell, to express individually or sexuality. Piercing shows up in many cultures.

A lot of people blame the 14 president for the current fad, but strangely enough Franklin Pierce didn't have any piercings at all but he did have a massive tattoo of Getty's Burg address on his back.

I have seen a few articles purporting to explain it. I don't really remember the explanations, but such articles are out there.
