Lip Piercing, is there away to prevent gum damage?

In theory if lip piercings had softer almost flesh like backing, would that not prevent gum damage?

For example, if one were to put a little chewing gum on the back of a labret stud at all times, then wouldn't the only thing be rubbing against the gum line be the gum like texture and no recession occur?
