@Region Philbis,
Good! Three right wing nuts off the streets! Travis and Gregory McMichael get life (the family that kills together, serves life together) without parole.

The Minnesota sentencing guidelines for Kim Potter’s offense say the judge has discretion to impose from 74 to 103 months. This Judge gave Potter 24 months. And eight of those 24 will be at-home confinement. So, yeah.

She’s the former cop who killed Daunte Wright by shooting him with her service pistol when she says she meant to TASE him. Shot him dead.

The judge said this had to be a drastically reduced sentence because under the circumstances, Potter would have been justified Tasing him.

Even though she, you know, didn’t tase him cause she, you know, forgot which weapon was which.

Sweet effing Jesus. I can’t with this “justice” system.

@snood,
I was just reading about that a few moments ago. Maybe there'll be an appeal?

The judge got all emotional while she was explaining her reasons for the bullshit sentence. It was unprofessional, besides being bullshit.

@snood,
Could the prosecutors appeal, though?

@Mame,
I don’t know. Have to look it up. That might be considered double jeopardy - not sure.

@snood,
I thought prosecutors were allowed to appeal the sentence.

To quote: The sentence is significantly less than the 7 years prosecutors had suggested."

I don't think double jeopardy applies here - isn't that where you can't charge the person with the same crime once they've been acquitted? This is just about the sentence.

Two years is not even a slap on the wrist with a wet noodle.

Great conversation!

Almost anything has at least some process for appeal. Being appealed doesn't guarantee any sort of outcomes. Judges and juries get sustained or over-ruled every day. That's what SCOTUS is about in the end - ultimate appeal.

I apologize up front if that was mansplained.

@Mame,
It's rare for prosecutors to sue a court for more years, when their main goal is to close cases that have people locked up at least for now. How far would prosecutors spend down their resources in furthering appeal towards the SCOTUS.

@Region Philbis,
This one is going to boil down to whether or not the cop can justify shooting someone in the back of the head because the cop was in fear for his own life.

If I was a betting man, I’d bet he gets off Scott free. But then, I’m jaded and cynical.

And there is a pretty long historical record to support that bet.

@snood,
You mean he's not already been on duty in the streets, yet.

I've been around and seen death, by accident and by purpose. I am unable in my 72 years to understand what goes rotten in the soul that makes killing a casual thing, a speedbump on a days patrol. Something that can be excused away in the one instance where the jury should not be made up of peers, let alone coworkers and bosses..

You are not jaded if no one will take that bet.
