Trump suggests the Jan. 6th coup attempt was a false flag operation.
The term "false flag" originated from a ship falsely flying a flag of the ship they were about to attack under the guise that they were friendly. This was often used by pirates to gain an advantage.

Many Trumper's are proud of the attempted coup on the capitol as practice for a future coup, but some claim it as a false flag operation, that Democrats staged the operation. This shows some hope for the Trump followers in that they are not willing to accept every action of Trump especially the most violent policies including the attempted coup on January 6th.
However, they still believe that Trump is virtuous and incapable of negative actions and that any of his actions are a justified means to a good end that are misinterpreted by the opposition press and made to appear nefarious. Thus the Press is to be blamed, ignored, opposed, and eliminated if possible, and the virtue of trump protected at any cost.
For Trump to suggest that the January 6th attack that he exhorted was a false flag operation has to stretch the credulity of even his most naive and fanatical followers. That he would even suggest that it was a false flag operation demonstrates his lack of respect and even contempt for his followers. This is such a twist of logic that it serves only to demonstrate his own perverted psyche in its desperate need for power.
To claim a false flag operation, in this case, means that the Democrats were behind the attempted coup and attack on the capital, that somehow Donald Trump's exhortations to stop the inauguration were aimed at Democrats to lead and foment the coup in order to make it look like the Republicans were behind the attack. This is very twisted logic and somehow involves the members of the mob all being undercover Democrats pretending to be lovers of trump. If this was the case, they were very good actors.
A false flag operation was also a tactic that is thought to have been used by Hitler and the Nazis after he was elected to Parliament but didn't have the majority. It was thought that the Nazis may have set fire to the Reichstag in order to falsely implicate communist members of the parliament, and by having them removed and arrested, result in the Nazis gaining a majority in parliament thus giving them the ability to invoke emergency rules, take away civil rights, and gain absolute power.
