What's the deal with Rule 34 material?

More reasons why I think Rule 34 material is produced:

Some people produce Rule 34 material because they are getting paid to do it. Some people make a living out of doing it. Apparently, I presume, there is a demand for this stuff, or people are producing it because they want there to be a demand for it; they could be producing this stuff because they think this is what people want to see.

There are some artists - animators, cartoonists, etc., who have become internet-famous producing Rule 34 material.

I know people are making money doing it. There are a few internet-famous Rule 34 artists I've learned about by being on Newgrounds and on YouTube.

What is the deal with the legality of Rule 34 material? Not all of it but a large portion of it is based on copyrighted and trademarked properties. This includes things like characters from cartoons, comics, video games, shows, movies, etc., or corporate, commercial and advertising mascots, etc. Any kind of copyrighted and/or trademarked fictional characters.

Does making porn out of something necessarily fall under Fair Use and does it constitute being a derivative work or works?

Some of it is considered parody. Some of it is considered copyright infringement.

People have gotten around this by using Patreon, where people technically would pay the artist directly on a monthly basis while the artist would create something (original work or using existing IP).

Most likely, the copyright holders would just send cease-and-desist letters to the artists and would try to avoid giving any more attention to the artwork through a long legal battle.

A lot of Rule 34 material is fan-made and companies know people are producing this. I presume companies generally don't want to get involved.

I know Nintendo doesn't at least. However I know Miyamoto has gone online and told fans to stop making gay porn material out of the Mario Bros.

Miyamoto had every right to go online and do that since he created Mario and Luigi.

Back in the late 80s I worked with someone who kept going on about his collection of porn videos. They sounded pretty disgusting to be honest including video of a man having sex with a chicken.

Most of the animated fart fetish videos I saw on YouTube were weird to say the least. Some of them were taken off of YouTube, I presume because YouTube thought they were too inappropriate.

No all fart fetish videos, especially animated ones are/were intended to be dirty. A number of them are supposed to be comedic.

As I said, I didn't even know fart fetishism was a thing until I watched an episode of Web Soup in which they talked about weird fetishes, a couple of years back.
