Usage of Google Calendar with Other Programs

Shortly before the time of an Event on my Google Calendar, the whole calendar will become shaded. I believe that this is a reminder to me to attend the event.

However, if I am using another program (e.g., MS Word) then I do not see the shaded calendar and I may forget to attend my event.

Is there a way to receive the reminder, when I am in another program?

@gollum,
On each event, you can set a reminder. It can be a text message an email or an alert.

@gollum,
engineer-

I can set a given Notification on either E-mail or on Notification.

If I choose Notification, then it shades my Calendar at the number of minutes before the Event time that I set. However, I will not see the shading if I do not have my PC Monitor on my Calendar.

If I choose E-mail, then it sends me an E-mail at the number of minutes before the Event time that I set. However, I will not see the E-mail if I do not have my PC Monitor on my G-mail Inbox.

I think that the solution may be to set my E-mail notifications to cause a chime or other sound when I receive a new E-mail. Therefore I went to G-mail Settings but I don't see such a Setting.
