The Highest Quality Shows on Television

What are in your opinion, the most polished, best written, brilliantly directed shows on Television?

I expect a wide variety of shows from a wide variety of demographics.

Here are my picks...

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
The Inside (Fox's New Show)
Everybody Loves Raymond
Friends
Orange County
The Shield
Nip/Tuck
24: Season 4
Smallville: Season 3 (And only Season 3 - The writing seems to have taken a huge dip since then)
Scrubs
Arrested Development
Family Guy
The Simpsons (Only the first several seasons)
Law and Order
The Practice

I'm sure there are several that I like that I forgot about.

TV
I have become so disappointed with the lack of entertaining shows on television. It seems that everything is "reality" based. But the shows that I think are well written, intelligent, and in my opinion, worthy of my time are:

Monk (so unique and amusing)
The 4400 (which is impressing me more and moe with each episode)
Sex in the City (which in spite of its sometimes raunchiness, is so enjoyable, even in re-runs)
The Daily Show (television doesn't get any better than this)

Shows that I will dearly miss and wonder why they were ever taken off the air:

Picket Fences (the best hour in the world!)
American Gothic (who would have thought that Saun Cassidy could have brought this gem of a show to life)
Twin Peaks (David Lynch is a genius. Period)
Push, Nevada (11 episodes and it was gone. this was the latest sucky moment in tv history. they never gave this show a chance pitting it against CSI, its almost as if they wanted it to fail)
Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (the commentary was priceless and hysterical)
Firefly (Joss Whedon is also a genius. (I am so glad he decided to make a film of this fantastic series)
The Lone Gunman (again, what a shame.)

Agree wholeheartedly. The new seasons make no sense and no point whatsoever.

C.S.I....The original one set in Las Vegas
Law and Order-Criminal Intent
American Dad...I realize it's not real people but that may be part of its charm, always makes me laugh.
Six Feet Under...the HBO series has been a little off this season but still keeps my attention.

The Daily Show
All four Law & Orders, (is there any chance of them bringing Trial by Jury back?)
Without A Trace
Medium

Notice I did not include a single situation comedy. What ever happened to that style of show?

There are only two comedies that I like even a little. Even these two go a little overboard too often, but they get an honorable mention for delivering sometimes:

Scrubs
Will & Grace

Monk is excellent but I don't watch it...fussy people make me fidget.

The Closer is pretty good. Sedgwick keeps things interesting.

Lately we've been sewer surfing on that channel that covers trials.. CSI without the bimbos

Hi all. For current TV shows I agree with a few previous posters: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

My other favorite fun/campy show is currently Boston Legal (BL), although it looks like it is in danger being/shuffled/eventually cancelled.

I don't really have a favorite situation comedy right now except for BL. Will & Grace, as someone else mentioned is probably an honorable mention. Sometimes I catch the reruns on late nights, and miss how good it used to be.

For dramas right now:
Rescue me
Numbers (although I think it's spelled with a numeral in it).

Originallly liked:
The Dead Zone
Monk
The 4400
However, cast and sched. changes et al., have gotten away from me, so drifted away from watching them.

As far as classic TV goes, I would go back and list a few including: I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda, Alice, M*A*S*H, Taxi, Are you being served?, Murphy Brown, and Seinfeld.
