Help Please - Bathroom Walls

Reply Thu 30 Jun, 2005 12:39 pm
My bathroom walls have a light brown substance dripping down the walls. I assume it is some type of mold, but I don't know. I would like to find out what it is and what can be done about it if anyone knows. I have already tried washing the walls with bleach and water mix and painting over it with Kilns. That helped for a couple of weeks and now it is back worse than ever. I would appreciate any kind of help. Thanks.

It may be a roof leak?
check and see if it is coming from a hole in your roof.

Mold would have been killed by a bleach solution oo I am with Shewolf on the roof thing. I think you have a leak.

Try to see if there is a water pipe, actually channeled into the wall in that area, or above. Most pipes nowadays, are surface mounted, but it was quite common practise to channel out a groove in the wall, secure the pipe in place in the groove, and cement or plaster so that the pipe didnt show.
If it IS a buried pipe that has a slight leak, the interior of the wall may be damp, causing mould to form on the surface.
It could also be that the wall on the outside of the building is constantly damp in that area for some reason.....same result.
Bleach will remove mould on the surface, but all you need is a few spores left alive inside the wall, and it will soon take over again.
Cure the moisture problem and the mould cannot survive.

So.....if you know anyone who owns a "dampmeter" (looks like a screwdriver with a "clockface" dial at the top, all good builders will have one), you can prod around the whole area in order to take readings.
Wherever you prod, write the result (in pencil) on that spot. After you have thoroughly covered a wide circle around the problem area, look for a pattern of high readings, and pencil a line (join the dots) between them.

If the line runs straight up, it looks like a roof leak....or a pipe in the attic etc....if it resembles a big circle, but doesnt have a line going up, it looks like a leaking pipe within the wall, or an outside damp problem.

For the mould, you can buy a specific Mould Killer solution, for bathrooms or other problem areas.

Good luck.

My lord, how do you insert the Mould Killer solution? By spray through holes in the wall? I have signs of mold in a wall (due to a leaking pipe in the floor (and a year ago in the wall)--they have both been corrected and I sprayed some Clorox in the wall before we put up the new dry wall. But in other places alongside the area of the leak, there are black sploches suggesting mold (do you agree?). I hate to call a company for something that can be fixed by oneself.
Besides I have to re-carpet that room and paint the wall in it.
Ah, the joys of home ownership.

P.S. I live in a very dry desert area, but I suppose mold is still a health problem, especially during the winter. What say you?

socialists/communists often have leaking wall problems; please to call your local young republicans for absolute correction. They will pasted posters of George W Bush on the bathroom walls covering the stain.

I REALLY hesitate to follow Dyslexia's advice on this matter(not that he's offered it) since the mold began shortly after his visit (and stay in the room in question). I suspect that HE might be the source of the mold and not a leaking water pipe.
But who knows for sure?
