Viking and Princess Cruises are helping customers who can't decide...

...they're suspending all cruises.

Most likely because many people are canceling - so it is not financially feasible to run a cruise with the ship only half full.

As I understand it, the crisis is that we will run out of hospital beds.

Also the number of available ventilators is limited.

Hell the death toll seem very unlikely to match the average Flu season.

Half a million deaths in the US is much worse than an average flu season.

In Italy, the coronavirus outbreak has reached the point where doctors are having to let patients die rather than give them ventilators that could be used to save others.

Doctors are refusing treatment to people who are old and who have other serious medical problems to free up beds for patients who are young and have the greatest chance of a long life.

This pandemic is serious.

complete nonsense numbers with no foundation in reality. Most people hardly even know when they have the virus and you need to be on your very last your very last legs to be at risk of death.

@BillRM,
That is incorrect. That estimate comes from an accredited public health expert.

The US has fewer hospital beds per capita than Italy does.

@BillRM,
I've given you the link dozens of times now.

https://www.unmc.edu/intmed/divisions/id/faculty/lawler.html

Those letters after his name "M.D., M.P.H." stand for "Medical Doctor, Master of Public Health"

Then there is the fact that he is an Associate Professor at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine.

And his residency: Internal Medicine, National Naval Medical Center

And his fellowship: Infectious Diseases, U.S. Armed Forces National Capital Consortium (National Naval Medical Center/Walter Reed Army Medical Center)

And his board certification: Infectious Diseases, American Board of Internal Medicine

@oralloy,
Sorry I am not at all interest in one person trying to get this name broadcast but I am instead interested in the CDC an other similar institutions predictions and positions.

Once more this virus seem fairly harmless if very annoying to anyone not up into old age with a pre existing conditions on top of that.

@BillRM,
He's not trying to get his name broadcast. The American Hospital Association had him give a presentation to our nation's hospitals to tell them what to expect in the pandemic.

But whether you are interested in what he has to say or not, he is very much an expert in public health.

@oralloy,
As I stated this is more annoying then deadly virus unless you are old with a pre existing condition on top of that such as .........

Quote:
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the death of the first victim who was an 82-year-old woman with emphysema.

Now why the hell would you do such things as ban public gatherings and shut down schools.

New York state experienced its first two deaths as a result of the novel coronavirus on Saturday, out of over 500 cases of the disease.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the death of the first victim who was an 82-year-old woman with emphysema.

She died Friday at Wyckoff Medical Center in Brooklyn where she had been a patient since March 3.

The second victim was a 65-years-old resident of Suffern who passed away on Thursday but later tested positive for COVID-19.

However, the patient also had "significant health problems which were likely contributory to death," according to Rockland County Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Laura Carbone.

The death we have been investigating within the Village of Suffern on March 12, 2020 has tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19). We are confirming that this is the first death in Rockland County due to COVID-19. The decedent was 65 years old and had other significant health problems which were likely contributory to death.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the woman was one of the city's first coronavirus cases and had been in critical condition ever since she was hospitalized.

"We’ve known from the outset that these people are the most at risk in this pandemic, and today’s news is a sad confirmation of that reality," de Blasio said.

Didn't we already explain this. The big risk is that too many people will get Coronavirus at the same time. Only between 10 and 20% of them will require hospitalization... but 10% of millions of people is a big deal.

What they are trying to prevent is a situation where there are more critical care patients then there are beds.

In Italy, doctors are having to choose whose life is worth saving while they let other people... they have a policy where young people without other issues are treated and old people or people with other health issues are left to die.

We don't want to reach this point. That is why slowing the spread by stopping large gatherings makes a lot of sense.

@maxdancona,
Strange is it not that we do not shut down the society for the common flu where some strains had proven far far more deadly then this virus an even the less deadly flu stains death totals match or come near matching this virus.

Quote:
While the impact of flu varies, it places a substantial burden on the health of people in the United States each year. CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010.

@BillRM,
You are not listening Bill. The fear is that the Corona virus, which is spreading very quickly in addition to the normal flu, will overwhelm the health system.

If you have more seriously sick people than you have hospital beds and ventilators... you have a serious problem. That is the issue here.

It is spreading very fast... the goal is to slow the spread so we can make sure we have enough hospital beds. Ending large crowds is the most logical way to slow the spread of the virus.

@maxdancona,
The public health experts are highly educated and intelligent people who have all the facts. Their job is to prevent the situation where there are more seriously sick people than there are hospital beds (because at that point you have to choose who to treat and let other people die... no one wants to be in that position).

My brother is a public health expert. He tells me what is going on.

The public health experts are terrified of this virus. The fear is that the quick spread of this virus will overwhelm our health system.

That's nowhere near the half million US deaths that have been predicted for COVID-19.

So it's not deadly except for all the cases where it is deadly.

While it is certainly worse to both be aged and have a health condition, either one alone is bad when it comes to this virus.

It's a desperate attempt to save lives by weathering this disease outbreak in slow motion instead of all at once.

They have a finite amount of ventilators, so they are going to have to triage and let people die from the lack of a ventilator.

The fewer people who are sick at the same time, the fewer people who are going to be left to die without a ventilator.
