I'm looking at data that gives, 85th, 90th, 50th, 15th and 10th scores. Are these centiles significant, or did they pluck them out of the air?

Those don't seem particularly significant. Sometimes you see 67%, 95% and 99% because they are roughly the one, two and three sigma points, but 85% and 90% don't have any particular meaning I know of.
