Upright is best. The resin tends to completely clog the valve if you lay it down.
A trick I use is to spin the valve off of the tank and siphon the water down to the resin line, then put the valve back on.
Now you can secure the tank at an angle - valve up. Just be gentle with it and you should be O.K.
