Hey All
We've gotten our hands on two framed paintings from the house of an old danish lady who just passed away. She allegedly had a sister who had a relationship with Emil Nolde. We have no idea if this is true, but we took these two paintings with us back home and we're hoping that there're some Nolde-informed people out there who can give a qualified guess on these paintings' origin. Maybe there nothing, but it could be funny if they're not. I thought I could upload them on this site, but that doesn't seem to be possible, so if anyone is interested in viewing these paintings, send me an email and I'll send the to your inbox.

Yours truly

emil nolde
except for the fact that emil nolde was a german painter, i don't know much about him. i'm sure i must have seen prints of his paintings while i was growing up.
to get an authentication process going i suggest you contact a local museum or perhaps an art dealer. while things are fresh in your mind, write down as much as possible about the danish lady, location of paintings ... "provenance" (the source of the paintings) is one of the most important things when trying to establish authenticity.
i am attaching a website with a good deal of information about nolde.
good luck, feller ... and let us know what you find out ! hbg

A work of Nolde was printed in a calendar I bought as a beginning college student. I don't remember now what the painting was, but he was a big influence on my even noticing painting having anything to do with me personally at all - meaning that I just plain liked it.

I remember Nolde from my art history days, but I am not qualified to make a judgement on the actual paintings.

Feller - it would be best for you to take the paintings to a professional appraiser for an opinion. Any quality auction house will have such a person on staff. It might cost you a little money, but it would be worth it to know the possible value.

I am not a Nolde expert, but my family was once in a situation similar to yours (different painter.) We contacted the leading art museum in our state capital (Staatsgalerie Stuttgart), who had one of its experts take a look at the painting. The expert's judgment was competent, and the interaction with him and the museum was friendly and professional. Based on our experiences, I can warmly recommend this path of action.
