Thanks dys. Sometimes I hear things and pay no attention to 'names'
artists, etc. I like this a lot

I hadn't heard this song for a long time. Then, a couple of days ago I heard it on the radio. As always, it made me think of MY father, and moved me to tears.

My Father's Eyes

Sailing down behind the sun,
Waiting for my prince to come.
Praying for the healing rain
To restore my soul again.

Just a toerag on the run.
How did I get here?
What have I done?
When will all my hopes arise?
How will I know him?
When I look in my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.
When I look in my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.

Then the light begins to shine
And I hear those ancient lullabies.
And as I watch this seedling grow,
Feel my heart start to overflow.

Where do I find the words to say?
How do I teach him?
What do we play?
Bit by bit, I've realized
That's when I need them,
That's when I need my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.
That's when I need my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.

Then the jagged edge appears
Through the distant clouds of tears.
I'm like a bridge that was washed away;
My foundations were made of clay.

As my soul slides down to die.
How could I lose him?
What did I try?
Bit by bit, I've realized
That he was here with me;
I looked into my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.
I looked into my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.

My father's eyes.
My father's eyes.
I looked into my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.

Fingers of the Sun

Fingers of the sun
Grip the mountain
Where hawk claws flash
And flicker in the dawn
The gates of Heaven are open
The gates of Earth are open
The watery abyss lies open
In the fingers of the sun
I mate with my free kind in the crags
The hidden recesses have heard the echo
Of my footsteps
In the fingers of the sun
Gates of Heaven are open to me
In the fingers of the sun
And bird beaks scream
In the fingers of the sun

repeat lines nine through twelve

Lumidee lyrics
" Break Away "

I had to break away from you
And try to get use to me
Being alone is so brand new
I never felt so free (In life I love)
The fact that cha no
(Loger thought of)
It's honestly, open a book of pictures there
Of us when times were fair
Happiness was always so scared
To reach us in our pair
(You left me there)
Going nowhere, pain I was aware
Cause it's you that had me there

I've mad up my mind, so let me go
I jus wanna let you know
This time I know that it's for real
I know in my heart that's how I feel

I can't believe how you had me
So confused and weak
I'm only strong, I can't go on
To understand my needs
It's only in your dreams
Me and you, could ever be
It's honesty, half the time I was blind
And I just could not see
All the damage that you did
You did do to me
(I held it on)
It's relief
(I was my own, my own dummy)

Chorus

I'm gone, you need to just move on
How could you not see, we weren't meant to be
I'm gone, you need to just move on
You and me, no more, I'm sorry, it's over

Chorus:2

I'm gone

What a great thread! My thanks to all of you.

Here is a little known piece, by the Austrailian Rolf Harris of "Tie Me Kangaroo Down" fame.

Two Little Boys
-

Two little boys
Had two little toys,
Each had a wooden horse;
Gaily they played
Each summer's day -
Warriors both of course.
One little chap
Then had a mishap,
Broke off his horse's head;
Cried for his toy,
Then cried for joy
As his young playmate said:
"Did you think I would leave you crying
When there's room on my horse for two?
Climb up here, Jack. we'll soon be flying;
I can go just as fast with two.
When we grow up we'll both be soldiers,
And our horses will not be toys;
And I wonder if we'll remember
When we were two little boys."

Long years passed,
War came so fast;
Bravely they marched away.
Cannons roared loud
And in the mad crowd
Wounded and dying lay.
Up went a shout -
A horse dashes out,
Out from the ranks so blue.
Galloped away
To where Joe lay
And then came a voice he knew:
"Did you think I would leave you dying
When there's room on my horse for two?
Climb up here, Joe, we'll soon be flying
Back to the ranks so blue.
Do you know, Joe, I'm all a-tremble,
Perhaps it's the battle's noise;
But I think it's that I remember
When we were two little boys."

Lovely for you to come by and post such a dramatic and warming piece of 'perfect love'.
I feel the emphasis of every heart that has known a true and fast friend - in these lines.
Yes, this was--- and is, for readings sake,
a WONDERFUL collection of lyric poems. I read it often, tho I rarely post anymore.
Thanks jackie

I remember two little boys. Rolf thought, listening to the start of the song, that it was completely stupid and that he'd never sing it. Then, he got to the part that made his hairs on his back stand up

"Did you think I would leave you dying
When there's room on my horse for two?
Climb up here, Joe, we'll soon be flying
Back to the ranks so blue.
Do you know, Joe, I'm all a-tremble,
Perhaps it's the battle's noise;
But I think it's that I remember
When we were two little boys."

I remember hearing this for the first time when I was really young... it still feels new every time I here it.

I prefer bona fide poetry to poetry in lyrics, but here are a few songs on my mind. I'll write one now, and then another after I have eaten the dinner, which I'm concocting.

Colorblind:

I am colorblind
Coffee black and egg white
Pull me out from inside
I am ready
I am ready
I am ready
I am
Taffy stuck and tongue tied
Stutter-shook and uptight
Pull me out from inside
I am ready
I am ready
I am ready
I am...fine
I am covered in skin
No one gets to come in
Pull me out from inside
I am folded, and unfolded, and unfolding
I am
colorblind
Coffee black and egg white
Pull me out from inside
I am ready
I am ready
I am ready
I am...fine
I am.... fine
I am fine

' I'll Never Find Another You'

The Seekers

(Words and Music by Tom Springfield)

There's a new world somewhere
They call The Promised Land
And I'll be there some day
If you will hold my hand
I still need you there beside me
No matter what I do
For I know I'll never find another you
There is always someone
For each of us they say
And you'll be my someone
For ever and a day
I could search the whole world over
Until my life is through
But I know I'll never find another you

It's a long, long journey
So stay by my side
When I walk through the storm
You'll be my guide, be my guide
If they gave me a fortune
My treasure would be small
I could lose it all tomorrow
And never mind at all
But if I should lose your love, dear
I don't know what I'll do
For I know I'll never find another you

But if I should lose your love, dear
I don't know what I'll do
For I know I'll never find another you
Another you, another you

(I saw this performed on PBS tonight)

How beautiful, jjorge!
Simple in its hopelessness.
I think it may be as good, as poetry... as a song.

Town With No Cheer
Tom Waits

Well it's hotter 'n blazes and all the long faces
there'll be no oasis for a dry local grazier
there'll be no refreshment for a thirsty jackaroo
from Melbourne to Adelaide on the overlander
with newfangled buffet cars and faster locomotives
the train stopped in Serviceton less and less often
There's nothing sadder than a town with no cheer
Voc Rail decided the canteen was no longer necessary there
no spirits, no bilgewater and 80 dry locals
and the high noon sun beats a hundred and four
there's a hummingbird trapped in a closed down shoe store

This tiny Victorian rhubarb
kept the watering hole open for sixty five years
now it's boilin' in a miserable March 21 st
wrapped the hills in a blanket of Patterson's curse
the train smokes down the xylophone
there'll be no stopping here
all ya can be is thirsty in a town with no cheer
no Bourbon, no Branchwater
though the townspeople here
fought her Vic Rail decree tooth and nail
now it's boilin' in a miserable March 21 st
wrapped the hills in a blanket of Patterson's curse
the train smokes down the xylophone
there'll be no stopping here
all ya can be is thirsty in a town with no cheer

I think I've heard cav's song; where was he talking about, or was it a general observation?

I agree; if a song is good enough, it can sometimes even be better.

'Driftwood,' Travis:

Everything is open
Nothing is set in stone
Rivers turn to oceans
Oceans tide you home
Home is where the heart is
But your heart had to roam
Drifting over bridges
Never to return
Watching bridges burn

You're driftwood floating underwater
Breaking into pieces, pieces, pieces
Just driftwood, hollow and of no use
Waterfalls will find you, bind you, grind you

Nobody is an island
Everyone had to go
Pillars turn to butter
Butterflying low
Low is where your heart is
But your heart has to grow
Drifting under bridges
Never with the flow

And you really didn't think it would happen
But it really is the end of the line
So I'm sorry that you've turned to driftwood
But you've been drifting for a long, long time

Everywhere there's trouble
Nowhere's safe to go
Pushes turn to shovels
Shovelling the snow
Frozen you have chosen
The path you wish to go
Drifting now forever
And forever more
Until you reach your shore

You're driftwood floating underwater
Breaking into pieces, pieces, pieces
Just driftwood, hollow and of no use
Waterfalls will find you, bind you, grind you

And you really didn't think it would happen
But it really is the end of the line
So I'm sorry that you've turned to driftwood
But you've been drifting for a long, long time
You've been drifting, for a long, long
Drifting for a long, long time

george and jjorge,

Two Little Boys and I'll Never Find Another You are two songs that really remind me of my childhood.

I have one brother and Rolf's ridiculously tacky song still makes my eyes damp, even now as I've just read it!

My mother also loved the Seeker's record and would play it/sing it around the house.

Happy memories - thanks.

Cav,
do you think Tom Waits has actually been to a town where he got "thirsty"?

Sounds like it, doesn't it?
Glad to see you're still 'singing'.

A well known Irish/Scot melody but the words are less well known --
After the disastrous defeat at Colloden at the hands of Lord Cumberland.
Skye Boat Song
Melody -

Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
Thunderclaps rend the air,
Baffled, our foes stand by the shore,
Follow they will not dare.

Chorus:
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing,
Onward, the sailors cry.
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye.

Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep,
Ocean's a royal bed.
Rock'd in the deep Flora will keep
Watch o'er your weary head.
Chorus:

Burned are our homes, exile and death,
Scattered the loyal man.
Yet ere the sword, cool in the sheath,
Charlie will come again.
Chorus:

Many's the lad fought on that day,
Well the claymor could wield,
When the night came, silently lay
Dead in Colloden's field.
Chorus: Colloden by the English.

You know what odd thoughts come to me, while reading this georgeob?
How the world's people LEAN so heavily on a "leader"-
You know- as their King, or Queen, or even just their town mayor.
And then I realized how VERY MUCH danger there always is, to the primary VOICES of a country.
(as your song says how the lads lie dead in the fields)

What an awesome path, for one who guards the 'leader'---
Think how awesome MUST be the leader, and if not.............

jackie, I expect that "thirsty" is a metaphor. This one from Fairport Convention always grabs me:

STRANGER TO HIMSELF

He was a stranger to himself,
A spy in his own camp,
And his money was his health,
All thrown to the dust by his very own hand.

Yet his beauty lingered still,
Beyond the draining of the sand,
But greener was the other side of the hill,
Richer was the other man's land.

But we loved him, loved him just like brothers would.
We loved him, loved him like no others could,
And she loved him, loved him like a lover should.

Take good care of an aching heart,
You never can replace it.
You know you are the master of your art,
You'll realise that when you think it fit.

Those orbs of blue are jading away,
No laughter from these dances.
Yet you're bound to remember this one day,
Hazards are risks, and risks are chances.

You can run for cover, run for cover like a frightened hare,
Till it's all over, all over and there's no-one there,
'Cause you daren't discover, daren't discover that we really care.

Although a silly '80s band, there are a couple of Echo and the Bunnymen songs I really like:

THE KILLING MOON

Under blue moon I saw you
So soon you'll take me
Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
Unwillingly mine

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

In starlit nights I saw you
So cruelly you kissed me
Your lips a magic world
Your sky all hung with jewels
The killing moon
Will come too soon

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

Under blue moon I saw you
So soon you'll take me
Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
Unwillingly mine

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
You give yourself to him

La la la la la...

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

La la la la la...

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

La la la la la...

OCEAN RAIN

All at sea again
And now my hurricanes have brought down this ocean rain
To bathe me again
My ship's a sail
Can you hear it's tender frame
Screaming from beneath the waves
Screaming from beneath the waves

All hands on deck at dawn
Sailing to sadder shores
Your port in my heavy storms
Harbours the blackest thoughts

I'm at sea again
And now your hurricanes have brought down this ocean rain
To bathe me again
My ship's a sail
Can you hear it's tender frame
Screaming from beneath the waves
Screaming from beneath the waves...

All hands on deck at dawn
Sailing to sadder shores
Your port in my heavy storms
Harbours the blackest thoughts

All hands on deck at dawn
Sailing to sadder shores
Your port in my heavy storms
Harbours the blackest thoughts

All at sea again
And now my hurricanes have brought down this ocean rain
To bathe me again
My ship's a sail
Hear it's tender frame
Screaming from beneath the waves
Screaming from beneath your waves
Screaming from beneath the waves
Screaming from beneath the waves

All hands on deck at dawn
