We somehow got started talking (over on the quotes thread) about the amazing talent and career of Jack Lemmon.
He had a career in films that spanned several decades and delivered one memorable performance -- in one memorable film -- after another.
Everything from searing drama (Days of Wine and Roses), poignant comedy/drama (The Apartment) and hilarious comedy (Some Like It Hot, The Odd Couple).
What Jack Lemmon films and performances are your favorites?
In fact, are there any other actors -- or actresses -- whom you think could do it all? Drama, Comedy, and everything in between?
I'd have to say Jason Robards was one. He could make you laugh (A Thousand Clowns) or make you depressed (Long Day's Journey Into Night).
Any others?
Rip Torn believe it or not..not a leading man but an amazing body of work.
Karl Malden comes to mind.
Oh, and "Out of Towners" is probably my fav off-hand.
Gene Hackman.
I loved Jack Lemmon as C.C. Baxter in "The Apartment." It's one of my favorite films and favorite performances. He owned that character from beginning to end.
Jimmy Stewart
You guys have really zoned in on it. Great answers.

Even with a few recent not-so-great movies, I think Kevin Spacey is building what will end up being a memorable career. I still believe he has the most startlingly poignant death scene when he is shot in "LA Confidential" I've ever seen. The whole revelation flashes across his face as he takes his final breaths on Earth.
Yeh, Spacey. Garden of Good and Evil and "The Shipping News" .
Sean Connery.
Hunt for Red October
The Medicine Man
Name of the Rose
My fav Dustin Hoffman movie is
Little Big Man
Henry Fonda in his best days.
I watched him in The Ox-Bow Incident Saturday.
How about James Cagney? From gangster films to tap dancing musicals...always thought he was one of the greats!
Loved Little Big Man. Tootsie. I Heart Huckabees.
Wait. They're all comedies. I know he did All the President's Men--but what really good dramatic movies did he do...? (Blocking)
Kramer vs. Kramer.....Rain Man....
There are so many. Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, Steve McQueen and Paul Newman immediately come to mind.
I don't remember any comedies for Mr. Fonda. Or Steve McQueen.
Cary Grant could do it all.
I loved Jimmy Stewart with Maureen O'Hara in "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation." He was a hoot! With just his face, he could tell a story.
How about female actors who could do it all? Doris Day. Natalie Wood.
My favorite Jack Lemmon movie is "Save the Tiger".
What a great movie.
I'd have to say my favorite Jack Lemmon movie was The Odd Couple. Such great comedy with him and Walter Mathau. So many great scenes. Especially when they entertained the Pidgeon sisters.
As far as an actress who could do it all -- Katherine Hepburn. She did several comedies with Spencer Tracy, and many great dramatic performances (Long Day's Journey Into Night, Lion in Winter, etc.)
