what's a UTE?

I wonder how many people caught that obscure reference, panzade.

Only so many members watch bad movies.

The movie is "My Cousin Vinny". The film won an Academy Award (Marisa Tomei). The only movie Gus has seen is "Old Yeller".

I think you had better reread the banter, wandel.

How do you suppose I KNEW that line came from a movie? Huh? Did ya ever think about that?

PAY ATTENTION!!!

How's about Larry Graham (Sly and the Family Stone).

I was going to mention him if no one else had. Mr. Graham was even stronger in his own group after Sly, Graham Central Station.

Also, Marshall Jones from the Ohio Players.

Ya gotta count the funk bands! Bootsy, altho' great, wasn't the only one.

aha, smorgs had already mentioned Graham. I missed that. Obviously we (myself, smorgs and eoe) are 3 great funky minds thinking alike!

Cool

And while we're on the subject of 80s post-punk, let's throw Public Image Ltd.'s Jah Wobble into the mix.

Henry Rollins was a big name in 80s post punk. My younger brother was his bassist on two albums.

Top claim to fame Wande.

I'm glad Jah Wobble got a mention - which means I have to mention Bill Laswell!

I really liked the album they did together. Bill is so much more than just a bass player. Check out his Credits on allmusic.com 6 pages of them....

For current bassists, an honorable mention has to go out to Justin C. from Tool.

Well...Im 28, and a bass player myself...To know who's the best you'll first have to ask yourself best for what??...Who is faster?..Claypool...no doubt. But Ill cast my vote for Paul McCartney in an all around contest. And here's why...Bring yourself back to 1963, in those years the bass players (except for jazz ones) only played notes...and rarely scales. Then a 21 yrs old guy from liverpool comes along and breaks the habit. Paul gave coolness to the bass player, usually the fat guy behind everybody else and who will never get the girls...am I wrong?. So, dear Paul also took the scales..and yes, he broke them to form figures. Pay attention to early beatles song's such as "drive my car" and "I saw her standing there" and you will know what I mean. He may not be the fastest...but sure he is the more talented, he can write, sing, compose...and look good while playing.

That is why Sir McCartney is the best bass player in rock and roll history...so far.

I can't believe that it took 3 pages for Geddy Lee to be mentioned and that was the extent of it.

@Gargamel,
Hey, Gargamel! Remember when I told you that my younger brother is a punk rock bassist? Here is his Wikipedia entry:

@wandeljw,
So he's from DC? Makes sense that he joined up with Rollins then.

@Gargamel,
My brother grew up in Chicago like I did. He dropped out of college because playing bass was his only real interest. A friend offered him a steady job in DC in about 1978. He moved there and stayed, playing with punk bands in coffee houses, and working in restaurant jobs. Henry Rollins had him flown to Leeds, England to work for a few months in the recording studio for his albums.

Sorry about going on and on, but I like boasting about my family.

That would be interesting, panzade. My brother started performing in DC in 1977 or 1978.

@wandeljw,

It's quite tricky to play the bass as well as Paul McCartney does and sing at the same time, as he does too.

I tried a Cort bass in the shop today, and it seemed nice. Are they any good?

@McTag,
That's an interesting question, McTag. I myself am not a musician. Once when my brother came to visit, he helped one of my sons select the best guitar to play.

Maybe panzade knows about the Cort model.
