THE GREATEST BASS PLAYER OF ALL TIME:

WILLIAM "BOOTSY" COLLINS

BOOTSY BABY!

My vote goes with Bootsy. After all, he did usher in my first serious trip on mushrooms when I was seventeen. I'd had a few stems, a few caps, and by the time Bootsy took the stage in the middle of one of those infamously long P-Funik shows, light seemed to stroke me in waves, Bootsy had his back to the crowd, his braids swinging in what seemed like stop-motion, crazy space sounds burping forth from his guitar.

Also, Funkadelic is way too often overlooked. One of my favorite bands right now.

"****, goddamn, get off your ass and jam!"

I would say Nikki Sixx. Motley Crue had the most complex bass lines. Either him, or the guy from Blink 182.

VICTOR WOOTEN of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

Look search him on a site like youtube, he's about as good as it gets.

Flea can play.

For five seconds he was in this great hardcore band called Fear.

great thread

but no idea who is best

i've learned a hell of a lot from Mani (stone roses) and flea (red hots)
(mostly, that I'm never going to be an especially good bass-guitarist)

i've an ear for Roger Glover (Deep purple) and i think James Jamerson (motown session man) gets overlooked

check out Jamerson here, 'sitting in' (how big was this guy?) on Marvin Gaye's (still apt for today)

I saw Stanley Clarke when he played with Return to Forever a couple years after they won a Grammy for the album 'No Mystery'.

...don't know if those references mean anything to anyone here, but...

Stanley Clarke is an amazing bassist, and I don't know how anyone could be better.

Another vote for Mike Watt. Minutemen, fIREHOSE, and now the Stooges.

And can you believe he actually sat in for a few tracks on Kelly Clarkson's new album?

I'm going with Les.

I'll throw out these for consideration:

John Myung-Dream Theater
Steve Harris-Iron Maiden
Cliff Burton-Metallica

my beloved '71 Jazz bass...I played bass for 20 years and Jamerson was who I admired. Also Chas Chandler of the aAnimals.
Then came Jaco Pastorious and I sorta got left behind...awestruck

Paul McCartney I think was the best at supporting melodies and vocals...now Victor Wooten holds me spellbound
