is pitching making a comeback?

is it my imagination, or are starting pitchers atempting to reclaim the sport of baseball back from the hitters?
Quote:
Quality Start
A Quality Start is a game in which the starter pitches 6 or more innings and allows 3 or fewer earned runs.

seems like there've been a slew of these over the first 6 weeks of the season.

i'm starting to wonder about the upswing in pitching versus the drug testing -- the implication being that a vast majority of major league hitters were on the juice, have now stopped, and the stats don't lie.

or is it simply a case of there being a large number of better-than-average starting pitchers?

I don't think it is a sudden increase in pitching talent. MLB has been watered down for years with average pitching. Just look at all of the BAD south paws out there that still have jobs simply because they are lefties.

I can't tell about starting pitching, but if we're talking overall pitching, the data does not support your claim, rp.

It seems that the odd year was 2004, which was very bad for pitchers. But there doesn't seem to be a trend.

In 2005, 10 MLB teams have an ERA below 4.00; last year there were only 3, but there were 7 in 2003 and 11 in 2002.
As for teams with over 4.50 ERA, there were 10 in 2002, 11 in 2003, 13 in 2004 and only 9 in 2005... but 3 of those nine (Cincinnati, Colorado and Tampa Bay) are over 5.50.

Pitchers are/were juicing too. They get power from their lower bodies. Supposedly velocity has come down for a lot of guys since testing went into play.

Certainly not based on the performance of the Giants bullpen.
