Can religion solve the world's problems?

With all the lofty ideals professed by the religious leaders of the world, is it too much to expect their adherents to finally lay down the sword and begin building a better life for all?

No, but i do believe it's a case of devil-take-the-hindmost when a straight line of such beautiful simplicity is put on offer . . .

Yes,
But you have to join MY church.
And prepare to tithe heavily.
Amen.

Brother Setanta,

When you join MY church, you will come to believe that pigs fly...You will also come to believe that a pig can be mighty tasty.

We calls it Transfattysubstantiation.

Can I get a Witness...and a couple of biscuits ?

When pigs do fly, i intend to have cornered a significant portion of the heavy-duty umbrella market.

When the birdie in the sky
Dropped the whitewash in my eye
I was brave and didn't cry
But I'm sure glad that pigs don't fly

What makes you think the world has problems?

Sure, there are problems...there have always been problems.

Seems to me we are simply far more aware of the rest of the world than ever before due to incredible advancements in travel and communication technology and it just seems like the world is a terrible place getting worse.

I think, despite the occaisonal bump in the road (like WWII) we are increasingly becoming better neighbours in spite of religion rather than because of it.

I have no quibble with your core thesis. This, however, is a case of a gratuitous slur, without foundation, and offered without evidence.

Yes, true Santana, I take it back. I thought I had found at least one, but it turned out he was Canadian!

Surely you aren't serious Setanta? I wasn't.

If you are, I apologize without reservation.

I accept that apology, and recognize what it says of your character. I would advise you that it does pay to have a little more care--i know, as i've done as badly myself.

Understood.

Can you see how I misread this as ironic humour on your part?:

Yes, i understand the severe limitation of conversing while not being face to face. Apply that same perspective a view of your original post, and your response.

Yes, edited accordingly.

Perhaps we should discuss, however, the general view (my claim, unsupported) behind my poor humour - that, on average, americans are less knowledgeable about the rest of the world than the inhabitants of other countries (probably for the very good reason that america at this time is the centre of the world for all practical purposes). I would be happy (perhaps relieved) to be shown that this is false, even bigotted view.

Some support of my view:
