Can bad publicity ruin an otherwise good film, and if so has it happened before?

Due to the advent of social media and websites allowing the ratings of movies, it has been shown that they can be abused by online trolls, or "protesters." However, what I am wondering is does there exist a legitimately good movie underneath all the negative publicity surrounding them?
