Sorry, my answer above is to Walter.

Letty, the Sahara is a very big place, spanning Africa almost from east to west, and effectively dividing the continent into 2 distinct cultural zones. It's true that it borders the Atlantic on the west side, but my little place is not close to the Atlantic.

But it is in the Sahara.

Not Egypt.

Walter is very close. See if you can find the Chott El Jerid.

Ah, Tico. A sigh of remembrance. Bud used to play "Night in Tunisia" solo on bass. Need to search some more as I get distracted easily. <smile>

>applause< You're both in Tunisia!

Now, if Letty can stay focussed and Walter can get away from straight lines .... Laughing

A hint: each tent in my place is quite luxurious, with air-conditioning and private bathrooms. Once you get there, you can dine very nicely compliments of a French-trained chef and then relax in the cigar bar.

Douz is the town on Chott el Jerid that would be the starting point of the 147 km clue. South and east of Douz.

After you've dined and relaxed, either in the cigar bar of the "ksar" or by the pool, you can ride the dunes in either a dune buggy or on camel, or take an ultralight.

I'm sorry but I can't find Sabria, Letty. Sabria's not it, but I was hoping to give you some direction from it.

Did you find Douza on the Chott el Jerid?

Midnight at the oasis
Send your camel to bed
Shadows painting our faces
Traces of romance in our head

Well, Tico. You don't want me to post the map that I found. HUGE. I know Midnight at the Oasis, honey. I'll keep looking, but I found some lyrics to Night in Tunisia and played them on the radio thread. Thank you for the inspiration.

Incidentally, Tico. I found both of those places. You did say that your place was south-southeast of Douz, right?

How about Bir Djabeur. No luck with oasis or images.

Nope.

You are probably really close. You might want to try putting together all the clues -- Tunisia, ksar, oasis and the type of place I've been describing (air-conditioned room with private bath, french dining, pool), and see what Google comes up with. I know it's there.

And I noticed on one map that ksar is also spelled qsar.

Cool

Thanks, Tico. I'll try, but my google is really obstreperous lately, and I am not kidding.

Is this it, Tico?

Pansea Douar Ksar Ghilane
Tented Camp

At the brink of the vast dune desert, this tiny natural oasis is accessible only in four-wheel-drive vehicles. The road may be rough, but at journey's end smooth living awaits: comfortable, well-equipped dove-white tents, a stylish reception area and restaurant, a beautiful swimming pool. Sheltered by a thicket of tamarisk trees, yet with a limitless horizon beyond, Pansea camp is not the middle of nowhere but an extraordinary and exciting wild location.

Yes!

Doesn't it look lovely? Or are your Florida eyes too familiar with that kind of thing?

According to one source, The English Patient's desert scenes were filmed here.

Your turn, Letty.

Yes, Tico, that place is lovely, but my Florida eyes are all too familiar with the eyes of hurricanes. <smile>

Wow! Why am I the only one who has to work so hard on this thread.

Back in a bit with a place.
