St. Petersburg is located where the Neva River empties into the Gulf of Finland. While there are beaches here, they are not exactly the French Riviera...you are only a few hundred miles from the arctic circle. This port city is icebound every winter, and locals are used to the long cold season. Sunbathers in April along the Peter Paul Fortress find a warm stone wall, sheltered from the breeze...while ice on the Neva flows by. (Since Peterburg is so far north, days get so long in summer that 'white nights' are celebrated when it's light 24 hours a day. The sun may set at midnight, but it never gets very far below the horizon, so twilight remains bright even at 2 AM.)
