Yes, Gozo harbour. This is where the ferry from the main island arrives and departs. There are some interesting things to see in Gozo, but a one day trip is plenty. One thing about Gozo is the fact that one town looks the same as all the others on the island, but there are some interesting things to see that is unique to Gozo/Malta.

We all know that various places have... just that, a sense of place, a genius of place.

At the same time one place is much like another and travellers often yawn their way through. But, if you stay in a place for a bit and ground yourself in it somehow, it becomes particular, sometimes for small reasons, or the history, or the present people. Or, of course sometimes the place flunks, or oneself does.

That's not at dig about you and Gozo, just talking here about travel in general.

Indeed, your feistiness about the knights of malta - and mine re what I have seen and heard - make me see your connection, via the person who told you about it, just as I connect to my history and reading, though I remain open to your and Walter's views. It is all a way of both personal association, and history, and myth to go with it, whose myth being the question in some cases.

I respect your connection.

osso, I hear you. It's very true that to really appreciate any destination, one should spend more than a fleeting time to get to know the people and the character of the place. I whole-heartedly agree. On my journey to Malta, we spent most of our time in and around Sliema where I hotel was located. I walked up and down most of the streets close to our hotel, hilly ones too, and got to know the area pretty well. I also took the bus on my own to Valletta, Mdina and Rabat several times, and walked the back streets as well as the main pedestrian malls - visiting the museums, churches, and restaurants where I was the only tourist (as far as I knew). Even walked from our hotel to VAlletta one day; not a short, level walk. The tour company also provided some tours around Malta to visit different towns, the fishing village, Hagar Qim, Tarxien Temples, and several museums. Our tour company also included a home-hosted lunch for five of us at a private Maltese home in another town. I even attended a concert by myself at the second oldest theater in Europe to listen to some classical music in Valletta. It was awesom, and I really enjoyed that evening. I truly believe we experienced the nature of Malta and its people during our 12-day visit, having learned some of its history, meeting the people, eating their food, and mixing with the natives on their streets, cafes, and churhces. The important thing for me is the simple fact that I enjoyed myself on this journey. I'm one of those wierd people that enjoys all the placees I visit.

That's good, Cicerone. Makes me want to check it out. I hope to get to Sicily and Malta one of these days. As you may remember, I have a pal who has been suggesting I move to Ortigia (the old part of Siricusa). Not likely, but I am interested in the region for itself.
