Just watched the first half of Sons & lovers on TV tonight & was quite impressed by many aspects of the production:
Sons And Lovers
8:30 pm Sunday 9 March 2003
"...averaged 7.4 million or nearly one in three viewers. It had 400,000 more viewers than 'Hornblower'." The Guardian
"...excellent. The script is spare, but strong, honest and free of cliché". The Times
"...a grand gripping adaptation of the novel.." The Daily Mail
A two-part dramatisation of DH Lawrence's Sons and Lovers begins on ABC TV on Sunday March 9 at 8.30pm. Sarah Lancashire, Hugo Speer, Rupert Evans and Esther Hall head the cast of this story that begins in 1885 when refined, intellectual Gertrude Coppard (Sarah Lancashire) meets and marries handsome Nottinghamshire miner Walter Morel (Hugo Speer).
As the sexual attraction between Gertrude and Walter wanes, their social, cultural and personal differences become ever more apparent. Walter takes to drinking heavily, and Gertrude puts all her love and frustrated ambition into raising sons William and Paul and daughter Annie.
As William and Paul grow up, Gertrude finds William's (James Murray) success with women increasingly difficult to deal with. William moves to London to work, and Gertrude's jealousy turns to Paul's (Rupert Evans) flirtation with a local girl, the intense and sensitive Miriam Leivers (Lindsay Marshal). Then tragedy strikes the family with the sudden death of William.

Before further discussion on this particular production, I'd be curious to know if any of you have seen it ... And what you thought.
Is this an Australian production? Sounds like a BBC.
BBC, I believe - I just taped it!
LarryBS
A British production, but first shown in Oz tonight.
Well, if anyone HAS seen it, I'd be interested to know what you think. I loved the novel & have read it a few times. Also enjoyed the old B & W film version of the book.
I won't say much else now, in case I find I'm talking to myself!
Just checked out the 1960 film version. An excellent film, but I had no idea it had received so many awards & nominations. Check this out:
