How to convince a parent to get a dog?

If you were my kid showing responsibility; doing your homework, doing your chores, keeping your word about when will be back home, would go a long way to convincing me to get a dog.

Different parents are different. If my daughter wanted to have a dog, the conversation would revolve around taking responsibility in general (which as a father, I think is fair since a dog is a big responsibility).

Have you laid out a written plan / contract on how you will care for the dog/contribute to the costs of owning a dog?

Oooo not yet...

And include in that how you will pay for the dog... this goes beyond the price or adoption fee...but food, vet bills, and other items the dog will need...

I want a dog for myself, and I would get one even if I didn't have a daughter. I am waiting to see what I can get my daughter to do; grades, chores... for the dog she thinks is for her.

But I am not a good father.... and I hate shoveling snow.
