One does not have a probation officer whilst in prison. Nor when one is out. One has a parole officer. Probation is for when one has been placed on a good behaviour bond.

I think you scared him away - or like you said he doesn't know how to behave so he is likely back in the can already.

I think it more likely that Ratz is old and confused - maybe got hit in the head once too many times in prison. I find it more likely what Ratz is saying is true - just he is too much messed up in the head to get the title right of probation vs parole.
