Hopeless dream?

I'm an ameteur art collector. I love looking at it and dreaming. My ultimate dream is to own an original Dali. I've read how many fakes are out there. When I took a cruise last year, they had a few and I was soo tempted to buy one but lacked the funds so I didn't.

Where would be the best place to get one? I went to the Dali museum in St Pete, FL and they said only from them. What do you think? What's the cheapest I could hope to get one for? Thanks so much for all of your advice. I want to just hang out here and learn from you all!!! Smile

I don't know, but I'm responding to bump this up on the New Questions list in case someone who does know will see it.

It seems a bit hard to believe that the Dali Museum is the only source for a genuine Dali. Did the executors of his estate give the museum exclusive right to the sale of his signed prints? I assume you are looking for a print, rather than a painting, as the paintings have grown extremely pricey.

I may be wrong, but I think it likely that genuine prints signed by Dali must be for sale in more than one place. New York would be a likely place.

Whatever you do, don't make a purchase that the seller will not guarantee, in writing.

Just as there are lots of sites on-line that offer "real" Dalis, there may also be sites on which there is information about what scams to watch out for. Education is the best defense!

Good luck in your hunt!

There are fewer fake Dali prints out there because of the Dali Foundation but it's easier on a cruise ship to pass one off when in international waters. Just make sure you're purchasing from a reputable gallery who has a lot at stake and won't try to sell fake Dali's (it's a federal offense and the laws have become more stringent -- they can't be sold, especially over the phone, as a secure investment). I can PM you with an E mail address and I will tell you where there is authentic Dali's (it's also risky to buy online, especially on E Bay, when the entity has no brick-and-mortar galleries where they would also be under scrutiny of State and County laws and authorities). After the Upstairs Gallery scandal in California, that's one of the safest areas to purchase Dali's. The local DA's are quite aware of that debacle and anyone risking selling a fake Dali would be looking at local and federal prosecution.

BTW, cruise ship auctions are not noted for getting good deals on real fine art. The bidding can often go higher than an off-the-wall price at a commercial gallery who specializes in prints by modern masters like Dali, Chagall and Miro.

This place seems to be very reputable, however I do not have first hand knowledge of this fact.
