That's what I need to know - is there some way an alternator will fail such that it will actually damage a car batttery so it can't hold a charge?

Not directly. Nonetheless an alternator can fail and a battery totally discharge on account of it and if you then let the battery sit there at night (on a cold night) and freeze....
It depends on how the alternator is damaged. If the alternator is not supplying enough voltage (which is almost always the case) it will damage a battery. Even if it doesn't directly damage the battery it will let the battery draw dead or close to it. Many batteries will take this kind of abuse several times, but if its an older battery or one of poor quality, it will damage the battery.
