@JLNobody,
Excellent post! JL, you are absolutely correct. With O not yet in office, the Reps are already acting to undermine needed reforms. It would be counterproductive to give the right any extra powers.

@Advocate,
CNBC reports this morning : "U.S. budget deficit seen hitting $1.186 trillion "

i wish president-elect obama and all americans the very best for 2009 !

it looks to me as if president-elect obama has been presented with a millstone to put around his neck and is being told to go and take swimming lessons .
he is not in a very enviable position .

as an aside : canadians are being told to be prudent and not get themselves into financial difficulties - while at the same time being told not to stop spending to prevent the economy from going into a tailspin .

an update on the canadian economy by canada's finace minister stated today that we should not expect any improvement in the economy before 2010 - which probably means : don't call me , i'll call you - sometime in 2010-2011-2012 ... ...
hbg

if things get really tough , i might start using some german "shinplasters" (notgeld = emergency money) issued in 1921 .
cities started to print their own money when the german central bank was unable to supply sufficient bills .
i have a small stack of them - a bit of a novelty and commentary on the times .

@JLNobody,
I can't disagree! When the Democrats won in 2006, I thought, finally we'll get somewhere, but the Dems are no paragon of virtue either, by judging what has happened in the last 2 days. Feinstein vocally told Obama where he can stick his CIA director and the negativity that was exposed by the Burris Senate snub, because THEY didn't hand-pick him to replace Obama. Just shooting themselves in the foot all around! Everybody is watching these prima donnas and it will backfire, trust me!

@Advocate,
If you ask me they ALL are full of you know what! It's why the Dems talk all of that bad talk about repugs, then heaven forbid they win and now, they ALL think, that they'll show the NEW kid, where to go and this is why schitt continually goes wrong and who loses? We do!

@teenyboone,
I think you need more patience. O has not even taken office yet.

Keep in mind that the Dems won the House in 2007, but lacked the votes to override Bush's vetoes. Thus, they were powerless to initiate anything. Starting now, this has all changed.

Whats funny is that if Obama gets his incentive plan passed, the economy will most likely tank.
Obama himself says that his plan could approach $1 trillion and will add substantially to an already record deficit.

And wasnt it the dems that were saying that you cant spend your way out of a recession?
Now they want to spend even more money?
That sure sounds like no plan instead of a sound plan.

Pelosi’s comments came just minutes before Obama began a major speech laying out the need for the stimulus plan, which he admitted yesterday could approach $1 trillion and will add substantially to an already record deficit.

The latest economic danger it seems to be that the US and the world economies are heading for stagflation. We seem to have a label for all economic disasters. I am waiting for the "hell in a hand basket "Label. In any event what is your assessment? Deflation, stagflation, recession, depression or jusrt plain OH ****

@au1929,
The economy is hurting, there is no doubt about that.
I have seen and heard the word "recession" thrown about.

If thats what it is, I refuse to be part of it.
I will continue to spend money and live my life the way I always have.
IMHO, a recession is a self fulfilling prophecy.
People hear that the economy is getting bad, that nobody is spending money, so they stop spending money.
When that happens, the recession occurs.

So, I refuse to participate in that.

CNN had a special on Madoff last night. It made me think that, at a minimum, O is going to bring in a lot more oversight. The lack of this is what brought this country to its knees.

@okie,
Okie,
In a perfect world, the last 8 years should have taught all moderates, Dems and Repugs, something, but I see the Democrats for who they are too! They're as bad with their ego-tripping as the Republicans were, when they were the majority. Why is it, that the Democrats are as wishy-washy?

I really am naive enough to think that there are some decent politicians, but no! The Clintons were the REAL shocker when Hillary was running and Obama was leading over her! Now, being the politician he is, let's face it, he (Obama), buckled to something more powerful than his self! Funny, we have the gall to call a segment of society the Mafia! All ethnics have had their "secret" socities, so what is happening in Washington? Anyone?

teenyboone, I agree 100%. I enjoy reading your posts, because you're not afraid to call a spade a spade. The dems have shown they have no backbone or any bone except in their brains.

@cicerone imposter,
Thanks! I know that as good as Obama speaks, we will have to be ever vigilant!
We are supposed to be protected by the Constitution and laws supposedly to protect our rights, but I think we are in for some surprises, even from Obama. I know he means well, but given the government he will be left with, we will all have to pitch in and offer him some assistance, else no one in America will be safe!
I was supposed to board a bus here, (New Jersey), to witness his installation but I slipped on some black ice on Christmas Eve, broke my ankle and I have a cast on my leg.
Well, me and my spouse will have hot drinks and good snacks to munch on at home. I hope this country survives the Bushes after 8 years of lies, deceit and the theft of the US Treasury. CI, God Bless You!

Washington has become unhinged, teeny. One must remember though that who America sends to Washington is roughly a reflection of itself. One thing I have noticed in my lifetime, religious faith has dropped considerably, moral standards have slipped mightily, scams and scam artists proliferate now, and this world is nothing like it was in my youth, in the 50's. So scammers and scam artists are also populating a significant percentage of Washington now, and that starts at the top in my opinion. You may trust Mr. Obama, I don't.

The other thing that is happening is we are now reaping a harvest of a very poor educational system in terms of teaching civics and history, and the temptation to slip into more and more socialism or even communism with time is possible, and perhaps even likely, along with some kind of one world order.

My best hope is that Obama's policies will fail, and Republicans can once again provide a much needed balance to the Democratic majority that threatens to run roughshod over us in Washington with all manner of really bad new policies. We have not had a truly outstanding conservative leader to come on the scene lately, and my party is waiting for one, hopefully to arrive at the right moment when enough people once again see the folly of liberal policies that continue to destroy the country if not reversed.

looking at stats about "teenage births" (from the CDC 2004) i see that teenage births are the lowest they had been in 60 years .
seems to be that "moral standards" in the 1950's were not the very best ... and looking at old newspapers show plenty of scammers were busy all over the place .

The Kefauver Committee and Organized Crime

Crime Buster from Tennessee.
The Kefauver committee, which has been called "probably the most important probe of organized crime" in U.S. history, revealed to Americans the activities of criminal operations earning millions of dollars yearly and of the corrupt public officials who allowed such operations to flourish. It was formed as the Senate Special Committee to Investigate Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce, but it came to be called the Kefauver committee after Sen. Estes Kefauver. The energetic Tennessee Democrat, looking to make a name for himself in his first term in the Senate, sponsored the resolution which created the committee and was its chairman. In order for the resolution to pass, Kefauver had to overcome stiff opposition from elder senators who distrusted their junior colleague's ambitions.

one difference is that nowadays these stories are much more readily trumpeted - and at least sometimes overblown .
i don't think the 50's had a "lock on morality" ... ...

Teen Birth Rate Lowest in Almost 60 Years

CDC pleased with efforts to reduce teen pregnancies

Dateline: Nov. 18, 2004
The U.S. birth rate among young adolescents aged 10-14 has fallen to the lowest level since 1946 according to a report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“We are encouraged by our continued progress in reducing births to teens of all ages, but we’re particularly pleased to make this kind of progress in such a young and vulnerable group,” said CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding.

let me add : i'm an old codger who sometimes thinks that "in the good old days" things wre so much better .. but i wouldn't want to go back to those days .

This is the sort of thing I see from people who have a romanticized view of the past. Actual data from human history shows you to be incorrect on pretty much every statement you've made, with the exception of Religious faith, which has declined. But if you think there were less scam artists and lower moral standards, you don't know much about the history of humanity.

Naturally, glorifying the past is a cornerstone of Conservatism, but it doesn't make it accurate in the slightest.
