Does anyone have any personal stories of indigenous people being harmed or helped by the tourism industry?

You can go to virtually any tourist resort in the Third World and find people that are very happy to be maid or waiters at resorts. Although some people claim that the tourist industry is destroying the life of these people, I guess these cynics did not talk to the affected people. The vast majority would rather be exploited by tourism than not exploited at all. After all, working in an air-conditioned hotel is preferable than barely staying alive as a dirt farmer. Working at a resort is considered as prestigious.
