Lady In Blue - Beautiful - Need Help

Reply Fri 25 Feb, 2005 07:05 am
My fiances grandmother remembers seeing this portrait as a little girl. She used to think it was of her mother. It belonged to my fiances great great grandmother. It has no signature and not even any markings. Looking at the back of it, it is very old, bound with what are now rusty nails.

Can anyone provide any information on this?
or point me in a direction where i may find the answer?

Great! Thats a start for me, I've been trying to get something to go on to identify the time period or something, anything, I guess that gives me some sort of idea.

My end goal would be to identify the artist and present as much relevant information as I could to my fiances grandmother.

Thank you for that bit of information. If any specific closeups of certain areas on the portrait would help just let me know, I have it with me.

Well, I saw a small 7" print of this picture the other day at someones house, it didn't have any information on it either though. So anyways, there were prints created of it at one time or another.

Weird... I'm surprised none of you art virtuosos have jumped in and recognized it Sad

It's likely an old roto-gravure print from the 1800's -- it's very Belle Epoque but since there was a flood of this work during the period, I don't see much chance of identifying the artist. You might send the photo to "Art and Antiques" magazine and they might be able to identify it. One thing I would do is take it to a custom framer to refit the piece. Hopefully it was framed with buffered material inside.

This might be a yard long print from the Pompeian Face Cream co.

Thanks shma, I appreciate the response I thought everyone had given up.

I'll research that some more.

I Googled "Pompeian Face Cream" for images but no luck. You could have something of real value here but I'd only be guessing. If you want to have this and other collectable possessions appraised, go to the site of the National Society of Appraisers and find one in your area. It can cost in excess of $300.00 depending on how many pieces you own. The other course is to mail a good visual to the aforementioned Art and Antiques magazine. I'm not too sure they reply to ever inquiry but the items that appear in the magazine are considered the most unique collectables. I do agree that it could also be a Gibson Girl print.

I believe that shma is correct. See below. One is called 1920 Pink Lady and the one in question is called Pompeian Beauty

Just do a search on Pompeian beauty. A 7x32 print can be purchased for about $9.95. These were part of the advertising campaign for this Company.

Another question. I am now trying to research the artist, Pannett, but I'm coming up with a numder of artists by that name...

Would anyone happen to know the full name of the artist?

this may help you. i have two yard long prints from the pompeian cold cream company. the way you tell if this is what you have is to take the picture out of the frame and look on the back of the print. it will have advertisement on it. you could order these back in the 1910-1920s for 10 cents each and mine are now worth a couple of hundred each. hope this helps!
