Self Storage Lots

I saw a meme mentioning that these places are a 22 billion dollar a year industry. Then the other day I saw a TV series about people who make it their business to bid on abandoned storage units. We have a giant storage lot near my neighborhood and an even bigger one under construction just up the street. They are spending a fortune to put this new one together, with a huge retainer pond in back and lots of RV space. I'm waiting to see if any of it gets air conditioning. All that money and a minimum of ongoing upkeep.

@edgarblythe,
My folks use the storage place to keep two large trucks parked. Cheaper than renting a commercial lot.

@edgarblythe,
We just signed up for one for my daughter in college. We have a 10+ hour drive from your college - makes it much easier to not have to get the roof top storage to bring all her stuff back and forth. We shared it with several of her friends so it is like $40 total for them to have for the summer.

Some of the units you rent are air conditioned, some are not. You pay accordingly - since the only electronic items we were storing were mini fridges and it is really just dorm stuff, we went the cheap route.

While I was there helping them move their stuff in - there were several units that had this extra lock on it saying they were overdue and they needed to settle with the front office before they could get their stuff. So I can see this happening where people get behind in the payments and just leave their stuff behind.

The unit we rented was within the building itself - smaller size - that you use a freight elevator to move your stuff to the higher floors. They did have some of those other single ones - that look like garages there as well.

My bosses, when I worked, bought a truckload of A/C condensing units, when those models were being phased out. Many of our in use condensers were over twenty years old. We rented self storage for them.

@edgarblythe,
I rented three to store geophysical equipment for about a year. hen I came in to the office and explained to the oner, (he had no idea what I was talikng about). His only instructions were that"I dont want nobody livin on them units, they aint fer livin in". I think he thought that "geophysics" had something to do with sex toys.
