Main Hydro Breaker Trips

Reply Sun 27 May, 2018 04:01 pm
Whenever I try to use my clothes dryer or portable a/c unit, the main breaker coming into the house trips after a few minutes, and I lose all power. None of the breakers inside my home have ever tripped. Any idea what might be causing it?

Electrical company says it's likely a problem with the house wiring and that they will charge higher that normal rates if not a problem with their breaker box.

If the power company's breaker is tripping, it is likely a bad breaker. I doubt it is house wiring. You should have two breakers (the breaker for the AC or dryer and the master house breaker) between the external breaker and your load.

It's likely engineer's advice will solve the problem.

you are going over your main breakers amperage load probably adding a portable ac unit is pushing your panel main breaker to the limit if its an older home, new homes have a 200 amp main breaker usually and if its 200 amps you shouldn't have a problem. with the ac unit on while you use the dryer it probably trips, but if the ac unit was off and you use the dryer it probably wont trip.
another thing could be that your portable ac unit is plugged into a regular 15 amp receptacle and may need to be on a 20 amp receptacle with 12 gauge wire, so you would need to read the label on the portable ac and see what amperage it usess
