Traveling during study abroad break...

I'm studying abroad for a year near Stuttgart, Germany and enjoying it a lot. The semester break is coming up and I was thinking about places to go, but that's essentially everywhere. Not possible for several reasons, not the least of which being time and $ (or rather $$ vs. €, and my lack of one meaning an increased lack of the other...).

A couple of friends and I are thinking of 4 days in Paris, 4 days in Berlin, a couple days in Amsterdam, maybe Prague and trying to visit a mutual friend in Sweden.

We've already been to Rome. I really liked it, was beautiful and warm (in general, both the people and the climate). Didn't like the amount of time we did it in though. Eww. 2 days of non-stop walking and sightseeing. Not really any time to just wander around and enjoy Rome as just that: Rome-- not all the other touristy stuff that goes with it. We did go for quality and not quantity, so we each saw what we really wanted to, but it was still so overwhelming, and the aches and pains lasted for a week. Worth it, yes, but still.

Okay, so concerns: where to go, having enough time there, €, and safety. I'm 20 and my friends are both 2 years older, we're all girls.

Any advice, suggestions on what to see, etc. would be appreciated. Smile

Sweden sounds the only one of your thoughts, which I really wouldn't make - re €€'s and time, only!

Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam can be done easily ... why not by bus (I'm sure, there are some quite cheap possibilities, especially in Swabia Laughing ; just have a look at one of the 'Anzeihgnblätter')

Apart from that, all cities offer rather inexpensive accomodations in youth hostels/hotels.

<What university is close to Stuttgart?>

I'm at Universität Tübingen.
So far we've checked buses, trains and flying. Sweden is the hang up. Both in time and money. Plus, our friend keeps asking us why we want to see Sweden in the middle of winter. Smile
Not sure that we are actually going to get it in unfortunately. Hope so, and maybe we can save in a few other areas and make it work.

Walking for four days around the Alb wouldn't be attractive for you, I suppose Laughing

Yes, your friend might be correct about Sweden. But what about meeting somewhere halfway - e.g. at the Baltic Sea? (Besides, have you looked up some of those special offers for ferries to Stockholm? You don't stay there longer than a day or so, but this is rather cheap at this time as well.)

Okay, so we actually managed to find some cheap tickets to Prague and Paris and then up to Sweden. Cheaper than we had been finding, and also found out that we will be able to stay part of the time with our friend, and part of the time at a family member's apartment (they'll be out of town), so actually it's looking like Sweden is going to be the cheapest part of the trip, or at the very least cost the same for 2 weeks as 1 week in Paris. Very Happy.

Getting more and more fed up with DB website, but found a really nice lady at the Bahnhof in Tuebingen and she found some tickets that we hadn't been able to get bookings for. Sooo... good news is that it works out: I'll have a little extra $ in my budget and can maybe fit someplace else in. Excited about that. Still need to check into prices though and maybe read up on what city/place holds my interest the most. (Maybe the Baltic Sea?) Hmmmm....
