Limed up Boiler

I have a hot water boiler making a ton of noise. I hae been told that it is limed up. The options I got for fixing it were using an acid which will probably cause the boiler to leak and replacing the boiler. Neither option sounds very good to me. Does anybody have any experience/suggetions on this?

On household water heaters, if there is a faucet/spigot, you can can attach a hose and drain the whole thing.... Sometimes it will expel the lime, if it hasn't completely solidified.

If that doesn't work, and the choice is between the acid and replacement, try the acid. What have you got to lose?
