I was stunned today when the local dealership told me my 2002 Mazda pickup with 2200 motor requires premium gas. That stuff is slightly over three dollars a gallon here. They swear the knock sensor can't correct for 87 octane gas and indeed the engune sounds like an ice in a blender when climbing hills. Ouch!!!
Sometimes they do require higher octane. Can you let us know the compression ratio?
Sometimes the manufacturer suggests hi-test even when its not required. I have a 73 Impala and the sticker on the radiator says the minimum octane requirement is 91, but its a joke. That engine had a slow ignition curve and very low compression so I'm not sure why they recommend 91.
I'm afraid I don't have the specks on it but from the engine knock going up hills I believe them.
That might be a coincidence compadre. Most new model pick-em-ups run fine on rot-gut gas. It might be a mechanical problem. Any dealers within a few thousand kilometers?
