Thanks Quinn, for the info. I have to phone numbers for vets who do housecalls. I can barely bring myself to think about it.

Thanks all for your concern and support.

She does seem to be doing a bit better today - as far as her infection goes. It's mostly stopped oozing (blech, sorry). The absesced tissue is still hard in that area - don't like that.

Can someone tel me how to spell absesce?

My internet connection is very wonky - frustratingly. I will be back up sto speed soon (but not soon enough, dammit).

Littlek--

Www.answer.com has a wonderful gadget that you download. If in doubt about a word put the cursor on the word, press "Alt" and click.

Immediately you discover whether or not your spelling is correct--and if it is not Answer.com offers a list of guesses as to what you could possibly mean.

Noddy, you are right. That just looks completely wrong, but "abscess" IS the correct spelling. I just checked three of my dictionaries, and they all agree.

You have taught this editor something new today.

Eva--

Words with any combinations of "c" and "s" look wrong to me.

Rather than tax my dyslexic (small "d", please note) I looked the word up.

I love www.answer.com and spell check. I feel my father's ghost improving my erratic spelling--without paternal exasperation.

So.... now I'm trying to think about it without getting emotional - not easy. I have a huge 1-2 week family reunion extravaganza at the end of June. There will be 2 adult dogs and a puppy as well as numerous children and adults. She gets along with one of the adult dogs, but not with the other (the 120 lb malamute) and the puppy is just too much for her. She can stay with me in the semi-furnished bedroom, but kids can't really be trusted to keep doors closed.

Somehow that seems like the next deadline - "before or after this date?" Which is the wrong way of looking at it.

Yah, I screwed up on abscess. Damn, it looks wrong. Maybe everyone else in my medical past spelled it wrong as well. But no, probably I am just wrong.

Littlek, hard decision time. Nothing easy about this. Only advice I can conjure up is to make it (oddly) ceremonial and honoring.

Littlek, I absolutely understand what you are going through. Having gone through this heartbreak several times with my cats and dogs, I've learned that loving your animal means not prolonging their suffering when nothing can be done to cure them. I've also learned that not acting when appropriate is to ease the agony of loss by the human, not the best interests of the animal.

True love is to be able to let go when suffering is involved. Very hard to do, but the most humane kind of love. If only we treated humans with as much love.

Littlek, I know you are the kind of loving person who thinks of the animal first, not yourself. After your dog's suffering ends, you will feel better for having done the right thing even while you weep for your beloved dog.

Lk, I had the vet come to my house to do the necessary's with my old dog, Ben. The Vet was wonderful and Ben just drifted off to a peaceful sleep.
He hated going to the vets, so I just couldn't bring myself to putting him through all that.

It's a tough decision you face, and I really feel for you.

The abscess/impacted anal gland event passed. She seems in much better spirits now than she had been before the antiobitics.

I really want to do her final visit with the vet at my house, or anywhere besides the vet itself.

Thanks all for posting, sorry I was out of touch - obgoing, but slowly resloving computer/connection issues.....

MsOlga - it is nice to see her being silly again! She trotted (and stumbled) around the house in her boobaru today. She did one lap and she was pooped - got to get her back on that routine. And her appetite is back to what it usually is (ravenous).
