That's deep...I think. ..do you mean 'give a moron a car and he will kill himself'??

Pretty much . . . the downside is that the morons sometimes survive while the "innocent bystanders" pay the ultimate price. It ain't really deep, it was offered as a flippant observation.

Ha, ha, ha! Actually I could not believe my ears when I heard the count was zero and I had looked it up not long before reading this thread. You missed this bit at the bottom, Dutch!

Qld is now tossing around the idea of double demerit points during the holidays which NSW introduced forever ago.

How does that work?? Sounds rather fascist ... we WILL punish you if you dare drive at a busy time and make us work for our money.

Almost, but not quite! It is really - we WILL punish you if you break the rules of the road at a busy time......when there are a lot more people (mainly families) using the road.

The following is summarised from the NSW Roads Traffic Authority website:

The Demerit Points Scheme is a national program that allocates penalty points (demerits) for a range of driving offences.....If a certain number of demerit points in a given timeframe are accumulated, (the) licence will be suspended or application for renewal refused, ie -
Full unrestricted licence holders - 12 demerit points in a three-year period.
Provisional P2 licence (2nd year drivers) - 7 points.
Provisional P1 licence (1st year drivers) - 4 points.
Unrestricted licence with a good behaviour period - 2 points within the term of the good behaviour period.

Double demerit points apply for speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences during all holiday periods such as long weekends, Christmas, New Year and Easter.

Suspension periods
Reaching or exceeding the demerit points limit results in licence suspension. For unrestricted gold, silver or magenta licence holders, the suspension periods are:

12 to 15 points: three months.
16 to 19 points: four months.
20 or more points: five months.
For provisional licence holders, the suspension period is three months.

Nah, sorry - still smacks of fascism.

If having more families on the road is the justification, how does that justify the crash helmet bit?

On this subject, one of the stupidest things ever made is the BABY ON BOARD sticker. What the hell is it supposed to achieve? Every time I see one I wryly think to myself 'Thanks for the warning!! I was just about to rear end you at 200kph..now I've reconsidered!'

Hi Tiger

Basically fatalities kick up in holiday periods (speed, fatigue and chemicals in the bloodstream). The authorities double the penalties in the major risk periods in the hope of getting through to people. NSW has had them since the 1990s. Queensland doesn't. NSW had no fatalities in Easter, QLD had 7 (topping the national table, go Canetoads). Not so much fascism as desparation. They aren't introducing capital punishment.

If you think that's facism you need to do politics 101 again.

Crash helmets stop brain injuries. Brain injuries can be a living death for the sufferer and their families. As someone who's father died a degenerative brain disease you will have a hard time convincing me otherwise.

As for 'baby on board' - there was a time when they annoyed me too. But I get it now (I've never had a baby) but I think there like L and P plates. They're a way of saying this is my situation, please take it into consideration before you tail gate me, give me the finger or blast your horn. I'm an impatient driver and I hate people driving 15k under the speed limit - but if they've got a newborn on board and they're terrified about killing their own child through reckless driving then I'll cut them some slack on the road and not get too het up about how much time they're adding to my drawn out commute.

...then they shouldn't be driving, if it undermines their confidence and/or judgment.

I know, don't jump on me about it, your thoughts were sarcastic and not meant literally. But you DID think, so maybe they are of some value. I've never been a BOB fan myself - I tend to think any signs or stickers on vehicles are unnecessary distractions.

You are entitled to your opinion, tiger, I respect that. Hopefully, for the rest of the road users in Enzed, with a bit of maturity, your horizons will broaden on a number of subjects. Good luck.
