@dlowan,
I was a little - I thought Bootlace was just a typical aussie a little a'feared of difference', with that strange race paranoia that some 'salt of the earth' types get, sometimes.

Should have realised I guess - I tried to give the benefit of the doubt.

@hingehead,
Oh, I'll watch that, too, hinge.
Thank you!
I have the greatest respect for John Pilger.
In fact, I could describe him as one of my (very few) contemporary journalist/media heroes! Smile

@hingehead,

@Bootlace,
That's your definition of multiculturalism, not mine. Multiculturalists oppose
the idea of enforced assimilation, they have no objection to providing access to
language and other services to help new immigrants 'acclimatize' to their new environments.

Ironbark resources? Give me a break. Funded by the Australian Protectionist Party
-which was formed by a guy considered to fascist for the Australia First Party?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Protectionist_Party

Now I know where you're coming from I'd like to see you go back there.

I know nothing about the Australian Protectionist society, but my search
on the internet returned a definition of multiculturalism and assimilation
that I reckon is spot on. So with your distorted logic, you automatically
assume that, that is where I am coming from.

You assumed WRONG!

Of course, anyone that disagrees with you is "full of ****" to use your words.
You like to be seen to embrace other cultures and religions but you
certainly do not display tolerance of views that go against yours.
Maybe you will gain maturity with time and realise not everyone will agree with you
all the time and it is something you have to accept graciously.

Whilst on the theme of cultural sensitivity, he is an example of Australians adapting
to other cultures and or religions. Was told by a lady her children were making easter
eggs at school, but they were not allowed to call them that. They have to be referred
to as sugar orbs or chocolate orbs wrapped in foil. Also you can't wish anyone happy
easter, but happy holidays is ok.
See how Oz kids are taught to show cultural sensitivity!

@Bootlace,
So you agree completely with something distributed by far right wing white supremacist isolationists - but I'm wrong to assume where you're coming from?

That you're down to whinging about hearsay about Easter rather than tell me something about multiculturalism that really ruins your quality of life says bundles.

You're right of course. People with coloured skin and different shaped eyes with rudimentary English with life histories of suffering and hardship, living in a country populated with a number of people who think they should be clones of some amorphous 'Australian culture' and are considered a threat if they are not have it so much better than you.

I tolerate you. But I detest your opinions on this matter. You expressed an opinion. I disagree with it. What's your problem? Go back and look at the 'full of ****' in context: (Bold added to make my point)

Quote:
I think you are full of **** Bootlace if you believe in the tired platitudes you are rolling out. Multiculturalism has worked. Tell me how you want people to act, tell me what they are doing that so distresses you, tell me how great Australia would be without the influence of migrants. Tell me how bad modern Australia is - because I think it is pretty ******* terrific.

What are you, a Murdoch journalist?

@hingehead,
The far right likes to spread 'political correctness gone mad,' stories like this because they actually believe them. They like to portray themselves as an embattled group fighting for the same freedoms that darker skinned people have because it gives them a heroic quality.

In many ways this is the worst sort of distortion of the truth because people like Bootlace lap it up. During the heady days of Thatcherism the Daily Mail printed a story about how 'loony left,' councils in London banned the singing of Bah Bah Black Sheep in schools. This was a complete lie, but it was believed by a lot of people, and not just the far right. It was even accepted by more traditional northern socialists, because the lie had been told so often.

@izzythepush,
I've seen it here too Izzy - a former colleague, a librarian, posted a story about christmas carols being banned at a kindergarten - even the most rudimentary Google search would have shown it was bollocks, but people want to believe it's true, so they have something to focus their anger on, to have something to blame for why they aren't completely happy with their lives. And you're right, it feeds off itself.

Saints still look the goods....

@hingehead,
All the talk here is about trouble. It's a local derby on Saturday, Saints are at the top and Pompey are in the relegation zone. I'll be glad when that match is over, and the skates have gone home.

A few years ago I was working for the social security. My mother told me that travellers had dogs because the state gave them extra money. I told her it was wrong, but she wouldn't have it, claiming the man at the post office had told her. I had to tell her in no uncertain terms it was bollocks, I knew because it was my job to know, I supervised travellers claims, the bloke in the post office just cashed their giros. I still don't think she believed me.

@izzythepush,
I just had look for sugar spheres on Google. Sigh. Bootlace's informant couldn't even get the fake story right. It was Seattle last year and it was bullshit then too.

I think it's particularly hilarious because serious Christians despise the Easter Eggs tradition too.

They never do believe you ....
Because their prejudices sound so much better, so much credible (to them) than the truth.
The stories I have heard about the lurks & perks asylum seekers receive!
You wouldn't believe.
Of course, what these folks really want to say but can't (in Oz, anyway) is that they despise Muslims & feel threatened by them.
Oh yes, & "turn back the boats!", too.
Let those pesky asylum seekers drown in the ocean, anything, rather than allow Muslims & other suspicious foreign riff-raff find a new home here!

Lurn the lingo like a dingo (Pt. won)

‘Y'godda hev awl in the engin ifya wannut ta run proplee.’ So when asked ‘Jeggoida the bynk, Frynk?" He had to say, ‘Noy, aw dingo that whey oime’.

Now, I ain’t no Tea Nature: you know; a young person, over the age of twaulve but younger than twinny, but I cannot remain silent no longer when I hear peoples making fun of ‘Waltzing Matilda’.

I feel I should put the bloody record straight and say ‘Waltzing’ is derived from the German term auf der Walz, which means to travel while working as a craftsman; and not bloody dancin’!

Furthermore, Matilda is not his Sheila; it’s a romantic term for a swagman's bundle.

Right’O who’s shout is it?
