@Procrustes,

Hoping to see my cousin in Shanghai for a couple of weeks, then a week in Amsterdam, then spend close to 2 months in Chicago with my auntie. I'm hoping to do this on budget and before my sister's wedding in December. I also hope I scrounge enough dosh together before I book tickets. Aaaaaahhhh....

I told you I'd feel envious, Proscrustes.
But I feel more than that.
I am green with jealousy! Wink

Sounds great!
Worth having to endure the crap of extra work for a bit, yes?
Good luck with getting the $$$$ together in time!

Procrustes said "then a week in Amsterdam", what's the attraction in the city I know so well?

Bah! Humbug! Ain't no long weekend here!

But - we've had 2 consecutive days of fine weather - the first for months. Summer was a total n0n-event Confused Fortunately no major flooding in my area.

Last week was hideously busy, so today was planned to be a quiet day - but - 4 sets of tennis has just about finished me off! I need a shower but don't have the energy to stand up at present.

(I must be getting old-er!)

Enjoy your break!

Wizard of Oz was meant to be an allegory involving the politics of money policies in the late 1800s. "OZ" meant "troy ounce" and the kingdom of Oz was meant to represent the Wallstreet banking community.

@gungasnake,
You really believe that Baum disguised this allegory in a children's book?

In the case of Australia, the "Oz" title is derived from Aus.
Pronounced "oz", a shortening of the word Australia.
We have called home Oz for years! Smile

For some reason, Australians are in the habit of shortening words ...
The MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) is called "the G".
Football = "footy"
A person with a surname like McDonald = "Macca"
Politician = "pollie"
Ambulance attendant = "ambo".
Good day = "g'day"
Etc, etc, etc ....

Don't ask me why it's so, it just is. Smile
My hunch is that the roots of this habit have something to do with cockney slang.
But I'm certain that someone else here can explain why better than I can.

@margo,
Greetings, margo!
I hope you've recovered from yesterday's excessively active sporting activities by now.
I've always argued that sport is dangerous & to be actively discouraged! Wink

And I suppose you won't be disparaging Melbourne's weather (as has been your habit!) for a bit, hey? Wink
I hope you get some real summer weather, even though it's autumn already.
What an odd experience this summer has been! Confused

No long weekend in NSW?
When is your Labour Day holiday then?

@Procrustes,
You'll love the museum & you'll love Amsterdam, too, Procrustes.
I certainly loved both, anyway. Smile

@Procrustes,
Amsterdam's brilliant. I've been there 5 times, twice with the kids. There's a brilliant zoo, tall ship and interractive science centre.
The rijksmuseum is pretty good too, I ended up being more blown away by Rembrandt than Van Gogh, didn't expect that.

@Procrustes,
I'd be inclined to recommend the Rijks Museum to you, you will be blown away by the collection of old Masters. The "Night Watch", Rembrandt's most famous piece is a must to see, I sat in front of it for 3 hours, mesmerised by the beautiful colours and details of the picture.

@Dutchy,
There's also The Night Watch statues, or Night Watch 3D.
