@Walter Hinteler,
Walter you have your areas mixed up! You mean the Reeperbahn in Hamburg. Amsterdam is a clean City. Laughing

@Dutchy,
For those who didn't know 'Night Watch' is properly known as 'The Shooting Company of Frans Banning Cocq' and is actually depicts a daytime scene.

For much of its existence, the painting was coated with a dark varnish which gave the incorrect impression that it depicted a night scene, leading to the name by which it is now commonly known. This varnish was removed only in the 1940s.

@msolga,
May 7. We get a show day too, in late July I think. But no October long weekend so it's nearly half a year without a public holiday! Barbarians.

Indeed!
Outrageous!

We (in Victoria) seem to get most of our public holidays in the first half of the year.
Not counting Melbourne Cup Day (first Tuesday in November of each year) of course.
And no, before you ask me to, I cannot justify a public holiday for a horse race.
Bizarre, but very welcome! Razz

Is it like Labor Day in the U.S., which is a day when everyone quits working.

@roger,
You mean a public holiday, roger? Wink
If so, yes.

But different Australian states hold the holiday on different days, as I'm just finding out ....
It's my state's turn today! Very Happy

@msolga,
This is the Rembrandt that jumped out at me, quite macabre, but also quite everyday.

@izzythepush,
This is the Night Watch, Rembrandt's greatest masterpiece I so much admired.

@Dutchy,
I know, it really jumps out. After looking at Rembrandt's stuff I felt a bit disappointed with Van Gogh. What got me about The Night Watch is how big it is.

@izzythepush,
The size of the Night Watch is indeed impressive, my brochure tells me it measures (363 x 437 cm ~ 11 ft 10in x 14 ft 4in).

@Procrustes,
Anne Frank's House on Prinsengracht 267 is worth seeing if you know her history, also a boat trip through the canals of Amsterdam is a must and very interesting.

@Dutchy,
Awesome. A boat trip around the canals sounds intersting. It would be a good way to gauge the city. Thanks. Smile
